Job Description

Duties include, but are not limited to: operating vacuum cleaning equipment, cleaning and polishing furniture, cleaning mirrors, cleaning toilet rooms and fixtures, stocking restroom supplies, dusting venetian blinds, spot washing walls, cleaning patient bedside equipment, making beds and changing linen, changing or replacing shower or cubicle curtains, collecting and transporting waste materials to a central location, reporting items in need of repair, sweeping and/or dust mopping floors and stairways, wet mopping rooms and small areas of the floor or stairs to clean up such items as spilled liquid or food, maintaining an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions, opening or locking buildings or rooms, turning on and off lights and equipment, replacing burnt-out incandescent light bulbs, moving and arranging furniture and furnishings, collecting and transporting soiled linen to central locations, cleaning the assigned area of work and equipment, wet mopping floors and stairways including carpeted areas, hand mopping areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment, operating walk-behind equipment used for routine floor cleaning, operating touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to read, write, and understand English. Must be able to follow both verbal and written instructions. Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities, including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, etc. Must not have any type of lifting restrictions. Must be able to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting.

Must be a team player, able to prioritize work, and be able to handle stress on a daily basis. Must be able to perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This position is 32 hours / Midnights/ Friday-Monday /11:30 PM - 8:00 AM

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check, including fingerprinting, is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
