Your New JobThe Director of Estimating is responsible for leading and managing the estimating function to support the organization’s growth, profitability, and strategic objectives. This role oversees the development of accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for projects while ensuring alignment with operational capabilities, market conditions, and financial targets. The Director of Estimating partners closely with executive leadership, operations, business development, and finance to drive successful bid strategies and project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities Leadership and Strategy- Lead, mentor, and develop the estimating team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Establish and implement estimating standards, processes, and best practices to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Align estimating strategies with company goals, market positioning, and long-term growth initiatives.
- Participate in strategic planning, identifying opportunities in new markets, services, and client segments.
- Oversee the preparation and review of detailed cost estimates, budgets, and proposals.
- Ensure estimates reflect current market pricing, labor, materials, subcontractor costs, and project risks.
- Manage bid schedules and ensure deadlines are met.
- Review project scopes, specifications, and drawings to ensure complete and accurate pricing.
- Partner with business development to support client presentations, proposal development, and bid strategy.
- Work closely with operations and project management to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to execution.
- Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and industry partners to support competitive pricing.
- Collaborate with finance on cost tracking, forecasting, and margin analysis.
- Identify risks, contingencies, and value engineering opportunities.
- Support contract reviews and commercial terms to protect company interests.
- Conduct post-bid and post-project reviews to improve future estimating accuracy.
- Implement and optimize estimating tools, systems, and data analytics.
- Develop cost databases, benchmarking, and reporting dashboards.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and quality.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive estimating experience, with leadership responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and cost structures.
- Proven experience managing complex and high-value projects.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong financial acumen and business mindset.
- Strategic thinking and decision-making.
- Ability to influence and collaborate across functions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- This role may require collaboration across multiple offices, project sites, and client locations.
- Occasional travel may be required.
