Research Scientist I (Research Data Services)

Job Summary

The Library at Georgia Institute of Technology seeks a technically skilled and collaborative Research Scientist to support data‑intensive research through applied data analysis, computational methods, and workflow development. This 12‑month position focuses on hands‑on research support, technical implementation, and data‑enabled research, partnering with faculty, students, and research teams across disciplines. The position reports to the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarly Access.

Location:

Atlanta, Georgia.

Compensation is a minimum salary of $70,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is a benefits‑eligible, non‑remote position; some teleworking hours are supported.

Responsibilities 90% Research and Scholarship
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and research teams on data‑intensive research projects across disciplines.
  • Apply data science, statistical, and computational methods to research problems, supporting data analysis, modeling, simulation, and interpretation.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary research initiatives and identify opportunities to enhance research through scalable, data‑driven approaches.
  • Develop and support computational workflows using tools such as Python, R, Jupyter Notebooks, Git Hub, and version control systems.
  • Design and implement reproducible research workflows and pipelines, supporting researchers in navigating advanced computational and cloud‑based research environments.
  • Develop reusable scripts, tools, and templates to improve research efficiency.
  • Assist researchers in integrating emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, into research workflows.
  • Partner with the Research Data Management Librarian/Archivist to support effective data practices, including organization, documentation, and reproducibility.
  • Contribute to the development of technical documentation, workflows, and best practices.
  • Stay current with trends in data science, computational research, and emerging technologies.
  • Contribute to scholarly research through publications, presentations, or other research outputs.
  • Participate as a collaborator or contributor on research projects, including potential co‑authorship.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to advance expertise in data science and computational research.
10% Service to the Library, Institute, and Profession
  • Participate in Library and campus committees, working groups, or initiatives related to research and data.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration across the Institute.
  • Engage with professional communities through service, presentations, or participation in relevant organizations.
  • Support the Library’s commitment to a collaborative and inclusive environment.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics, information science, or a related field.
Preferred
  • Experience working with research data in an academic, research, or applied setting.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R.
  • Experience with data analysis, modeling, or scientific computing.
  • Familiarity with high‑performance computing or cloud‑based environments.
  • Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, or advanced analytics.
  • Experience collaborating on interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience developing reproducible research workflows.
  • Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • The ability to apply expertise in teaching, scholarship, and/or service to advance student success.
