Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Building Maintenance, Maintenance Worker

Job Summary: This position performs duties in corrective and preventative maintenance, construction and repair of county parks, grounds, and equipment. Duties include constructing structures, pouring and finishing cement, painting, installing and maintaining water and irrigation systems, and performing basic electrical work.
Essential Functions:- Perform corrective and preventative maintenance work at parks, including constructing structures (porches, boat ramps, sidewalks, curbs, signs), painting buildings, signs, tables, fences, spreading rock, soil, and bark mulch, installing and maintaining water and sewer systems, installing and servicing irrigation systems, performing basic electrical work, repairing playground equipment, cleaning boat ramps and restrooms, and restocking restrooms.
- Provide a variety of groundskeeping and landscaping duties, such as planting, cultivating, mowing, fertilizing, spraying, pruning, vacuuming, and/or blowing grass and leaves.
- Operate hand power tools and light to heavy equipment, including mower, dump, flatbed, or garbage trucks, tractor, backhoe, trencher, sweeper, and cat. Perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
- Move picnic tables and equipment from area to area and provide garbage pickup for parks.
- Winterize parks at season end and prepare parks for spring opening.
Qualifications:
Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered; however, the following is preferred:
- Three years progressively responsible work experience in park construction and maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and/or building construction, including experience in plumbing, irrigation, painting, roofing, cement work, electrical, and grounds maintenance areas.
Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance, irrigation systems, building and facility construction and maintenance methods and practices, equipment and materials as applied to park maintenance and development; reasonable knowledge of Oregon specialty codes that govern building and plumbing construction; reasonable knowledge of operation, maintenance and minor repair of assigned equipment and machinery.
Ability to:Safely operate appropriate power tools and equipment; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; read blueprints and layout sketches; estimate time and materials for individual projects and manage time efficiently; maintain record‑keeping; utilize problem‑identification and resolution techniques; remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high‑pressure situations; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees and the public.
Required:- At time of appointment, must possess a valid Oregon driver’s license.
- Regular and consistent attendance.
Background investigation:
The finalist may be required to pass a criminal history background check as part of a contingent offer of employment.
Physical examination/drug screen:
Employment is contingent upon a pre‑employment drug screen. Presence of non‑prescribed drugs may result in disqualification. A post‑offer medical and hearing exam will be conducted at county expense to determine physical qualification.
Driving requirements:
The position requires driving. Finalist must provide a driving history that meets the Douglas County Driver Policy as part of contingent offer of employment.
