Job SummaryUnder the direction of a supervisor, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds, maintains equipment, provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, staff, teachers, administrators, visitors, and others when necessary. May help with building security by locking/unlocking doors when requested, and do final lock‑up of the building at night including turning on security systems. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are essential.
This position is required to work sixteen (16) hours during the district's winter break and receives sixteen (16) hours of additional paid time off that must be used before July 31 of the subsequent calendar year. The specific hours worked are coordinated with the school administration and other contract custodians to ensure coverage of the building throughout the break.
- Assist with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
- Check and secure building at the beginning and end of shift to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to district standards.
- Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, sills, and touchpoints.
- Maintain, clean, and sanitize restrooms.
- Fill soap, paper towel, toilet paper, and other dispensers.
- Mop or run auto scrubber.
- Extract or bonnet carpets.
- Assist with floor refinishing.
- Maintain grounds, including mowing and edging lawns, removing snow, ice, debris, weeding, raking, watering, and sweeping.
- Remove graffiti and repair other acts of vandalism.
- Clean up garbage, repair furniture, lockers, doors, and small equipment.
- Perform minor repairs on windows, doors, switches, desks, tables, equipment, appliances, sinks, toilets, blinds, etc.
- Assemble new equipment and furniture.
- Prepare and set up rooms for meetings and activities and clean up afterwards.
- Maintain swimming pools, including chemical maintenance according to outlined standards.
- Help maintain and operate mechanical systems.
- Assist in restricting access by locking and unlocking doors.
- Participate in building security after hours.
- Turn on/off security and lock/unlock the building.
- Attend all required apprenticeship classes and complete demonstrations and competency logs.
- Perform duties in a manner to maintain at least 80 % VEKTR inspection score.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Operate and maintain basic cleaning equipment, including buffers, extractors, and auto scrubber.
- Perform minor adjustments to equipment.
- Understand basic use of cleaning solvents and their proper application.
- Understand emergency procedures such as shelters in place, lockdown protocols, fire and earthquake drills, building and grounds layout for emergency shut‑offs, and vandalism protocols.
- Follow oral and/or written requests from supervisors.
- Basic reading and math skills.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Required Prior ExperienceAt least one (1) year of successful, full‑time custodial or related experience.
Assigned Decision MakingMake decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned by supervisors, take direction well, and work within specific guidelines. Make suggestions but be willing to follow directions.
Interactions with OthersInteract positively with students, teachers, principals, custodians, and other district personnel. May also interact appropriately with parents, counselors, and police agencies.
Supervisory ResponsibilityMay supervise and provide assistance to hourly custodial employees.
Working EnvironmentWork inside and outside the building to accomplish assigned tasks. Conditions can be hot or cold. Hazards may exist when using power equipment, ladders, scaffolds, mopping, using buffers on wet floors, and when working with chemicals. Frequent interruptions and stress from disruptive students or groups may occur. Proper training is required for handling cleaning chemicals and must be handled properly.
Physical Requirements- Speak and/or hear.
- Frequently stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Stand for long periods of time.
- Lift or move up to 100 lbs.
