The Building Operations Engineer at the American National Red Cross supports mission-driven programs by ensuring safe, efficient operation of facilities and building systems. Reporting to Facilities, Maintenance & Asset Management, this role oversees HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety systems; performs inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance; coordinates vendors; and responds to building emergencies. The Engineer monitors energy use, maintains asset records, supports space changes and minor projects, and partners with staff and volunteers to provide reliable, code-compliant spaces for disaster response, training, and daily operations.
Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and maintain HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems to ensure safe, reliable building performance.
- Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs using a CMMS to track work orders and assets.
- Support life-safety, fire alarm, and emergency systems; assist with drills, testing, and coordination with inspectors.
- Respond to facility emergencies, alarms, and after-hours issues to minimize disruption to Red Cross operations.
- Coordinate and oversee outside contractors and vendors; verify work quality and compliance with safety and building codes.
- Monitor energy consumption and building automation systems to identify opportunities for efficiency and comfort improvements.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation for equipment, inspections, and regulatory compliance.
- Support space changes, minor construction, and facility projects in coordination with Facilities leadership and stakeholders.
- Ensure safe work practices, adherence to OSHA and NFPA standards, and a clean, organized mechanical and utility space.
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to understand operational needs and provide facilities support for programs and events.
