The City of Orinda is seeking reliable, skilled, and service‑oriented professionals to join our Public Works team as a Facility Maintenance Worker I / II

Flexible 9/80 Work Schedule

Enjoy a balanced schedule with every other week featuring a three‑day weekend. New hires begin on a Monday‑Friday schedule with every other Friday off, transitioning after six months to a Tuesday‑Saturday schedule with alternating Tuesdays off.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll perform a wide range of custodial, maintenance, and repair work to keep City facilities clean, safe, and fully operational. You’ll also collaborate with the Public Works Maintenance team as needed to support broader infrastructure and maintenance efforts.

This position participates in an on‑call rotation (approximately every six weeks) to respond to after‑hours emergencies. On‑call assignments are primarily related to streets, trees, and storm drain systems, and training will be provided to ensure you are prepared to respond effectively.

Responsibilities include:
  • Perform custodial duties such as cleaning, floor care, and restroom maintenance
  • Maintain and repair City buildings, parks, and recreational facilities
  • Assist with plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and irrigation repairs
  • Set up and break down rooms and spaces for meetings and community events
  • Prepare and maintain sports fields and landscaped areas
  • Identify and address maintenance issues and safety hazards
  • Respond to service requests and interact with the public in a professional manner

About the Position Levels Facility Maintenance Worker I (Entry‑Level)
  • Ideal for candidates starting in facilities or maintenance work
  • Performs routine tasks under close supervision
  • Opportunity to learn and grow into higher levels
Facility Maintenance Worker II (Journey‑Level)
  • Performs the full range of duties with increasing independence
  • Requires prior experience and strong working knowledge of maintenance practices
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience in general maintenance, construction, landscaping, or facilities work
  • Working knowledge of building trades such as plumbing, electrical, or carpentry
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in indoor and outdoor environments
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to safety
  • Excellent teamwork and customer service mindset
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience:
    • Level I:
      One year of related experience
    • Level II:
      Three years of experience equivalent to Level I
  • Valid California driver’s license and a safe driving record
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain)
Work Environment

This position involves regular physical activity, including lifting, climbing, and working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Incumbents participate in an on‑call rotation to respond to emergencies and may be required to work evenings and weekends as needed. Work on July 4th Holiday is required.
