Position: DEVELOPMENT SERVICES INTERN

Opportunity at a Glance

Under immediate supervision of professional staff, this position performs work of routine difficulty in collecting, verifying, and entering of data. This position supports the Development Services Department functions and will be exposed to local government best practices and management techniques.

Key Responsibilities

The Development Services Intern is expected to maintain regular and consistent attendance. This position collects and verifies data pertaining to land use, development, and tax information. The intern conducts site visits, documents observations, and communicates findings through reports and discussions with staff.

The intern assists in the preparation of reports, development review applications, grant applications, presentation maps, and other related documents. Responsibilities also include gathering information and data from government agencies and other sources to support planning and development projects and preparing reports summarizing data collection results for professional staff.

Additional duties include entering and maintaining data into computer software programs such as Tyler EPL and Microsoft Office, assisting with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, and performing other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Completion of, or progress toward completion of, the core curriculum for a bachelor's or master's degree, preferably in Urban Planning, Geography, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of geographic principles, computer software and data management, and basic drafting techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with diverse data sources (municipal, state, federal preferred).
  • Familiarity with municipal operations is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; office experience preferred.
  • Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Must possess a positive attitude and strong initiative.

Undergraduate Intern:
Basic knowledge of skill(s) needed to perform assigned duties.

Graduate Intern:
Bachelor’s degree in applicable field of study; working knowledge of skill(s) needed to perform assigned duties.

Compensation

Hourly pay: $18.85–$26.71. This internship is a year-long opportunity.

The position allows the intern to work up to 19 hours per week.
