Position Overview

The Butte County General Services Department is looking to fill one Regular Help Position vacancy within their Custodian Classification. Work hours are Monday through Friday 3:00 pm - 12:00 am. Shift Differential Pay. Position is subject to additional background check requirements, including local, state and national fingerprinting through DOJ and FBI. A Pre-Employment Physical is required.

Under general supervision, performs custodial, cleaning, and basic maintenance work in County buildings and adjacent grounds; performs related duties as assigned.

Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision of staff.

This is the journey-level classification responsible for independently performing custodial duties in support of County buildings and grounds. Positions at this level perform the full range of duties as assigned working independently and exercising judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

This class is distinguished from Senior Custodian in that the latter is responsible for providing technical and functional direction over lower-level staff.

• Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors; sweeps and vacuums rugs; spot cleans carpets.
• Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
• Empties, cleans, and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
• Washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings, venetian blinds, furniture, and light fixtures.
• Cleans and disinfects restrooms; restocks restroom supplies, as necessary.
• Strips, seals, and buffs floors.
• Closes windows, turns off lights, and locks and unlocks doors to secure buildings.
• Keeps basic records of work performed, timesheets, etc.
• Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
• Corrects or reports any safety or fire hazards.
• Follows label instructions to mix and dilute cleansers, disinfectants, and stripping agents to ensure proper strength for use.
• Uses a variety of custodian tools, equipment, and supplies; maintains equipment and materials in proper condition.
• Changes interior and exterior light bulbs and tubes, as necessary.
• Assists with facility projects, as necessary.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

• Proper cleaning methods, and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools, and equipment.
• Use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in janitorial work.
• Safety practices and equipment related to the work.
• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
• The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
• Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

• Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
• Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
• Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
• One (1) year of experience in janitorial or custodial work.
