Street Maintenance Worker (Senior)
The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department seeks a Street Maintenance Worker with strong technical and customer service skills who approaches work with a can‑do attitude and is eager to learn and develop career opportunities.
Responsibilities- Maintain, repair, and construct streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, parking lots, waterways, storm drains, alleys, and related facilities; fabricate, install, and repair traffic and informational signs and paint legends, centerlines, and crosswalks.
- Repair and patch streets, alleys, and parking lots by hand, perform hot and cold asphalt applications; conduct concrete work for sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; overlay pavement; lay, rake, roll, and iron hot asphalt; break and remove pavements; and haul and load soil, sand, gravel, cement, asphalts and other materials.
- Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools; operate heavy and light‑duty construction and street repair equipment, including trucks, tractors, loaders, spreaders, rollers, and various hand and power tools.
- Implement traffic control measures at job sites, including sign placement, traffic control arrow‑board, and coning; direct traffic flow.
- Perform after‑hours emergency work as required.
- Set up and maintain equipment and tools, conduct general inspections, clean site areas, and perform repairs and maintenance.
- Plan routes, work activities and set up work areas for safety and operational efficiency; may set up traffic control measures.
- Respond to customer inquiries, maintain activity logs, records, work orders and related reports.
- Operate, clean and maintain mechanical equipment; provide semi‑skilled and physical labor in the maintenance of streets and traffic equipment.
Standard hours: 7:00 AM–4:30 PM Monday through Thursday, alternate Fridays 7:00 AM–3:30 PM. Staff may be assigned to shifts outside the standard hours and are required to rotate standby duty.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of technical maintenance experience related to street maintenance.
- Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record (may be required for some positions).
- Effective oral and written communication in English.
- Proficiency with computer use and common office software (Microsoft Office/Google).
- Regular, reliable attendance and strong communication skills; ability to develop working relationships.
Employees may be subject to a 12‑month probationary period. Employees may also be called to serve as disaster service workers per California Government Code Section 3100.
New employees must provide proof of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. The City participates in E‑Verify.
