The City of Seward is recruiting for Seasonal Park Maintenance Workers Summer

This position is responsible for maintaining the appearance, health, and safety of municipal parks and recreation facilities, including campgrounds, sports fields, trails, and cemeteries. Ensures finished work upholds the high standards of quality, reliability, and usability expected by the public. Must be able to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. May be required to work split and/or solo shifts.

DETAILED

DUTIES:
  • Performs a variety of manual, semi‑skilled, and skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of City parks and recreation facilities.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs as needed, park grounds and facilities, including performing minor electrical/plumbing repairs, carpentry, painting, landscaping, etc.
  • Maintains grounds and turf in city parks and cemetery by mowing, trimming, weeding, and grooming.
  • Prepares and maintains athletic fields and related recreation facilities.
  • Operates light vehicles and specialized equipment such as mowers, weed whackers, chain saws, spray rigs, aerators, tool cats, snowplows, sanders, and various hand tools. Mechanical knowledge in equipment maintenance.
  • Cleans Park grounds and buildings, including restrooms, pavilions and other facilities.
  • Picks up litter and empties refuse containers.
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment used on the job.
  • Completes various reports, work orders, and related documents.
  • Assists with preparing for and cleaning up after special events.
  • Provides friendly customer service and works collaboratively with others to accomplish tasks.
  • Follows safe work practices.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/

EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and some experience working with the public required; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and ability:

  • Department policies and procedures.
  • Objectives of public outdoor recreation, human behavior and mental and physical hygiene as applied to parks and campground recreational maintenance.
  • Basic maintenance principles and practices used in the maintenance of recreational facilities.
  • Maintenance and repair.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Customer service.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Perform basic mathematical computations.
  • File incident reports and collection sheets.
  • Multi‑task and prioritize work.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, campground patrons and the general public.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Hand‑eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of maintenance equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, bend, and balance, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and sometimes lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed mostly outdoors. The employee is frequently exposed to odors, noise, heat, cold, wetness and humidity, and occasionally exposed to other adverse conditions including dim lighting, dust, toxic agents, electrical currents, and heavy machinery.
