Position Summary

Under supervision, maintain the school facility (buildings, grounds, and equipment) in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Perform minor maintenance on district buildings and equipment, inform the Custodian Supervisor of repair needs, and participate in special projects or routine work.

Responsibilities

Clean buildings and equipment according to established schedules, sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, removing trash, polishing, washing, waxing, stripping, and shampooing floors, and participate in scheduled summer major cleanup procedures (Daily).

Perform minor maintenance on district buildings and equipment, replacing light bulbs, repairing lockers, broken desks and chairs, bathroom fixtures, ceiling tiles, baseboards, electric sockets, and light switches as needed (As needed).

Ensure buildings, grounds, and equipment are operational and safe for daily operations, inspecting for cleanliness and repair needs, and determining appropriate actions to deter vandalism (Daily).

Secure buildings by unlocking/locking doors and gates, turning on/off lights, and keeping sidewalks and entryways free of snow and debris (Daily).

Set up and take down equipment for lunchroom preparations, special events, evening meetings, or other building usage, monitoring student behavior during recess, class intermissions, lunch breaks, and school activities, and contacting the appropriate individual (Daily).

Inform supervisors or appropriate personnel of cleaning supplies and parts needed for daily operations and assist in stocking the building with necessary supplies (Daily).

Interact with teachers, students, or the general public; perform evening and weekend security and equipment checks; assist and/or train custodial substitutes as needed (As needed).

Deliver mail and supplies to teachers, classrooms, etc., check incoming mail and freight during summer months, inventory custodial machines, and assist with repairs and troubleshooting of copy machines (Daily).

Schedule bell change times and clocks, assist in locating fire alarm sources when alarms are pulled, and help reset alarm systems; change filters, check computers for alarms, check boilers, and operate fan units as needed (As needed).

Perform other related custodial functions as directed (As needed).

Qualifications

Knowledge
:
Basic knowledge of cleaning compounds and chemicals.

Skills
:
Ability to follow instructions and perform physically demanding tasks.

Training and Experience
:
High School Diploma.

Licensing Requirements
:
Valid Alaskan Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle tools or controls, talk or hear, reach with hands and arms, occasionally sit, squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, climb ladders, and frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies and custodial machines. Occasionally the employee will lift or move up to 53 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Heavy Work

Lifting/carrying a maximum weight of 53 pounds occasionally.
Pushing a maximum force of 50 feet per pound.
Pulling a maximum force of 50 feet per pound.
Dynamic Lifting Criteria: 12 inches to knuckle – 53 pounds; knuckle to shoulder – 25 pounds; shoulder to overhead – none specified.

Additional Requirements

Successful completion of the WorkSTEPSevaluation program and cooperation with its procedures are required. The candidate must complete release paperwork and demonstrate the ability to safely and effectively perform job functions.
