Position Summary
A 1.0 FTE Custodian position at Redington Jr/Sr High School, starting July 15, 2026, night shift 4:30 pm–1:00 am. Position type:
Classified Custodial Position. Pay Grade 3 with a starting wage of $17.83, 222 days per year.
- Maintain school facility (buildings, grounds, and equipment) in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
- Clean buildings and equipment according to established schedules; sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, remove trash, polish, and perform floor maintenance.
- Perform minor maintenance on district buildings and equipment, including replacing light bulbs, repairing lockers, broken desks or chairs, bathroom fixtures, ceiling tiles, baseboards, electric sockets, and light switches.
- Inspect areas for cleanliness and repair needs, determining appropriate actions to deter vandalism and damage.
- Secure the building by unlocking/locking doors and gates, operating lights, and maintaining sidewalks and entry‑ways free of snow and debris.
- Set up and take down equipment (e.g., tables and chairs) for lunchroom preparations, scheduled and special events, evening meetings, or other building usage; monitor student behavior during recess, class intermissions, lunch breaks, and school activities.
- Inform superior or appropriate personnel of cleaning supplies and replacement parts needed for daily operations, and assist in stocking the building with necessary supplies.
- Assist with evening and weekend security and equipment checks, and train custodial substitutes as needed.
- Deliver mail and supplies to teachers and classrooms; check incoming mail and freight during summer months; inventory custodial machines; repair broken doors, carpets, sinks, bathroom fixtures, and copy machine problems.
- Schedule bell change times and clocks; locate fire alarm sources when alarms are pulled; reset alarm systems; change filters; check computers for alarms; operate and repair fan units and associated minor problems.
- Perform other related custodial functions as directed.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning compounds and chemicals.
- Skills:
ability to use various cleaning equipment and tools. - Training and experience: high school diploma.
- Licensing requirement: valid Alaskan driver’s license.
- Regularly stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear.
- Reach with hands and arms frequently; occasionally sit.
- Frequently squat, stoop, kneel; reach above the head and forward; use hand‑strength to grip tools and climb ladders.
- Frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift or move up to 53 pounds.
- Push, pull, or maneuver objects such as tables, bleachers, and cleaning machines; operating forces up to 50 ft./lbs. may be required.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Lifting/carrying up to 53 pounds occasionally.
- Pushing a maximum force of 50 ft./lbs.
- Pulling a maximum force of 50 ft./lbs.
Conditional offer is based on participation in the WorkSTEPSevaluation program at least 3 days prior to start date, completing a release authorizing post‑offer examination, and successful completion of the program demonstrating safe performance of essential functions.
