Northwestern Medicine seeks a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to serve as a Neurohospitalist in the inpatient Neurology department, with occasional outpatient assignments. The APP will rotate through critical‑care, stroke, and general neurology units.
ScheduleMonday‑Friday standard business hours, approximately 50% day and 50% evening. No nights, weekends, holidays, or on‑call duties.
Essential Functions- Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of diverse health problems.
- Responsible for the health outcomes of an assigned patient population.
- Consults with collaborating physicians and other health professionals in the area of clinical expertise.
- Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families, and staff.
- Mentors graduate students in advanced practice and patient care.
- Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research relevant to the area of expertise.
- Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients’ health status by taking histories and performing physical examinations.
- Provide direct clinical care to patients.
- Prescribe or order medications, therapies, laboratory tests, imaging, and procedures in accordance with clinical privileges.
- Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care.
- Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
- Document all care and education provided, as well as procedures performed, in the medical record.
- Refer to other disciplines when appropriate.
- Serve as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise.
- Integrate research‑based knowledge and clinical expertise into decision making.
- Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner, and presentation.
- Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community.
- Maintain certifications and continuing education required for licensure and privileging.
- Serve as a role model and preceptor to students.
- Provide formal education to internal and external groups relevant to the specialty.
- Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees, task forces, or quality improvement initiatives as appropriate.
Required
- Master’s degree from an accredited nursing or physician assistant program.
- Acute care certification required for APRNs.
- Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois (and as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse if applicable).
- Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board, or current license as a Physician Assistant in Illinois.
- Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
- Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation – BLS issued by the American Heart Association.
Preferred
- At least 2 years of neurology experience.
