Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean, Academic Services/Director, Center for Teaching and Learning, the Learning Experience Designer serves as an expert partner in teaching and learning, collaborating with full-time and adjunct faculty across all academic divisions to design, implement, and enhance high-impact, student-centered learning experiences across all instructional modalities (face-to-face and all distance learning formats). This role applies learning science, instructional design frameworks (e.g., Backward Design), and evidence-based teaching practices to align course outcomes, activities, and assessments.

The Learning Experience Designer promotes humanized, student-centered, and engaging learning environments by integrating Universal Design for Learning (UDL), accessibility standards, and effective use of instructional technology.

The position provides leadership in faculty development, course design, distance learning quality, and instructional innovation, contributing to institutional priorities related to student success, retention, and teaching excellence. The Learning Experience Designer will assist in fostering an environment supportive of the college’s mission and is dedicated to the learning college concepts by developing programs and facilitating activities that promote student success and lifelong learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned):

  • 1. Partner with full-time and adjunct faculty across all academic divisions as an expert in teaching excellence, translating learning science and frameworks into practical strategies that align course outcomes, learning activities, and assessments

  • 2. Collaborate with CTL staff to design and facilitate comprehensive faculty development initiatives, including onboarding programs, workshops, webinars, in-service events, learning communities, and on-demand resources
  • 3. Lead course design consultations and provide individualized support to faculty
  • 4. Support instructional planning through scaffolding, differentiation, course pacing, and workload balance, including guidance for compressed academic terms
  • 5. Collaborate with faculty to cultivate accessible, student-centered, and engaging classroom environments by embedding Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into course design
  • 6. Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging instructional technologies to support continuous improvement and institutional effectiveness.
  • 7. Advise faculty on the effective use of instructional technologies, including cloud-based tools and video platforms, to enhance collaboration, engagement, and content delivery
  • 8. Develop, maintain, and oversee certification processes and teaching quality standards for faculty instructing in online and distance learning environments
  • 9. Conduct course reviews for distance learning using recognized standards (e.g., OSCQR) to ensure quality, consistency, student-centered design, and regulatory compliance
  • 10. Collaborate with the Learning Management System (LMS) administrator to promote the LMS as an intentional design environment that supports effective teaching and learning
  • 11. Serve on institutional committees and participate in cross-functional initiatives that support teaching excellence, innovation, and student success.
  • 12. Actively participate in professional organizations (e.g., ILCCO, OLC, EDUCAUSE, POD Network) to stay informed on best practices, contribute to the field, and build collaborative networks
  • 13. Support compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and ADA requirements for distance education, and advise faculty on integrating key elements, such as Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI), copyright, fair use, and open educational resources (OER), for high-quality instruction
