Part Time - Meter Reader

Job Description

This position is responsible reading water utility meters. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Meter Reader II.”

• Reads meters along an assigned route.
• Notes and reports illicit connections or bypasses of meters and backflow prev enters.
• Investigates high consumption readings to identify possible leaks.
• Observes and reports any visible leaks of meters, backflow prev enters, or other utility components.
• Marks meter location on roadway to assist with future locations.
• Trims vegetation around meters for safety and ease of access.
• Monitors and reports meter assembly and meter box repair and maintenance needs.
• Coordinates repairs to assigned vehicle and equipment.
• Provides information and assistance to customers.
• Makes minor repairs of lids and meter boxes as needed.
• Performs related duties.

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Meter Reader I – Must have graduated from standard high school, or GED; prior experience in water meter reading would be preferable.
• Meter Reader II – Must have graduated from standard high school, or vocational school; considerable experience in water meter reading division; applicants with previous supervisory experience are preferred.

• Knowledge of meter reading principles and practices.
• Knowledge of meter functions.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
• Knowledge of the streets and geography of the city.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
• Skill in the provision of customer services.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

The Billing Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include city ordinances and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

• The work consists of related meter reading duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to read water meters. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of utility billing operations.

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, customers, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and potentially aggressive wildlife and domestic pets. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
