City Building Maintenance Position

This position is responsible for keeping City buildings clean and in orderly condition, performing minor maintenance and repair, setting up Council Chambers and maintaining grounds. Incumbent ensures that City buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner.

Examples of Duties
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles; replaces liners.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms; restocks restroom supplies.
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, polishes, and vacuums floors.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, blinds, and windowsills.
  • Sets up rooms for conferences and meetings.
  • Constructs and rearranges furniture.
  • Washes windows, walls, and baseboards.
  • Maintains grounds around buildings; sweeps walkways.
  • Maintains supply inventory.
  • Replaces light bulbs.
  • Reports repair needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs minor repairs. Notifies supervisor concerning need for supplies, major repairs, or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding the cost effectiveness and efficiency of in-house maintenance operations and repairs versus similar operations of outside vendors.
  • Performs proper maintenance and minor repair of all City buildings including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, Heating Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, carpentry, and general maintenance; provides assistance in determining economic replacement schedule.
  • Runs errands and delivers mail to city departments.
  • Arranges Council chambers for meetings; sets up tables and arranges chairs.
  • Performs related duties.
Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Supplemental Information

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand labels, instructions, use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Skill in operating such cleaning equipment as a vacuum cleaner.
  • Employee must occasionally handle boxes and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools involving the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of buildings.
  • Ability to understand written and visual instructions regarding building code requirements and other industry standards as they relate to facility repairs and maintenance.
  • Must be willing and able to clean up unpleasant bio-hazardous waste (blood, saliva and other bodily fluids) in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Knowledge of commercial air conditioning and refrigeration units and heating systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Skill in following instructions and prioritizing work.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is typically performed in city buildings and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to dust, mold and mildew and caustic and irritating cleaning chemicals; and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles associated with toner cartridges in printing, fax, and copy equipment.
