The Park Ridge Public Library is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Cataloging Librarian to perform original and copy cataloging of library materials in a wide variety of formats, following current national and local cataloging standards. This position supports the accessibility and management of the library’s collection through accurate bibliographic and item records, authority control, and ongoing catalog maintenance. The Cataloging Librarian also provides internal customer service support to library staff and performs related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Performs original and copy cataloging of new materials using the OCLC database, creating and enhancing MARC records in accordance with national standards and local policies.
- Classifies and assigns subject headings to library materials using Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Web Dewey, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), other controlled vocabularies as appropriate, and consortium standards.
- Searches, creates, and imports bibliographic records from OCLC into the Polaris Integrated Library System (ILS).
- Maintains and updates bibliographic, authority, and item records to ensure catalog accuracy and consistency.
- Troubleshoots basic catalog, bibliographic, and item record issues.
- Collaborates with Technical Services staff and provides responsive customer service support to library staff.
- Adapts to evolving cataloging standards, workflows, and technologies.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support Technical Services operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS) from an ALA-accredited program, including coursework in cataloging, classification, and related technologies.
- Working knowledge of Resource Description and Access (RDA) for descriptive cataloging.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and changing standards.
- Service-oriented attitude with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of professional library experience, preferably in a public library setting.
- Experience with MARC formats and AACR2/RDA cataloging standards.
- Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems (ILS), preferably Polaris.
- Familiarity with fiction genres.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, Publisher, Paint, or Canva.
Reading knowledge of Polish or Spanish is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to handle library materials; reach with arms; push and pull loaded 40 lbs. book carts; bend, stretch, kneel; and communicate clearly.
- Ability to perform data entry and computer work for extended periods.
