Overview

Major Responsibilities: Interprets physician referrals and evaluates the patient's physical, perceptual, cognitive, social, and vocational abilities and their impact on activities of daily living. Establishes a plan of care and implements individualized treatment based on evaluation results and functional goals. Provides and/or fabricates assistive devices and/or splints to enhance functional independence. Monitors and evaluates outcomes, adjusts the treatment plan as needed, and communicates with physicians and the care team.

Plans for discharge, including home programs, patient/family teaching, referrals for community services, transition planning, and equipment ordering as indicated. Maintains documentation per department policy and accreditation standards with appropriate co-signatures.

Responsibilities (cont.) Includes documentation of patient care and progress, daily statistics, billing, and scheduling. Applies insurance guidelines for authorization and number of visits. Maintains site/department productivity standards. Adheres to all billing and documentation policies, procedures, and timelines. Ensures a clean and orderly work area and proper equipment handling after treatment. Demonstrates use of modalities, exercise equipment, and other devices, and applies knowledge of indications and contraindications.

Promotes patient safety and follows safety and infection control measures.

Responsibilities (team/quality) Participates in performance improvement activities, manages caseload, and coordinates coverage with site leadership. Supports department needs and regional requirements for coverage. Pursues professional growth through continuing education, department in-services, and reading. Orients new staff and participates in coworker evaluations as requested. May supervise occupational therapy assistants, rehab aides/techs, and occupational therapy students as applicable and in compliance with requirements.

Minimum

Job Requirements

Education
Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program or equivalent aligned with graduation date; maintains continuing education requirements as mandated by state standards.

Certification / Registration / License
Licensed Occupational Therapist in the applicable state. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (AHA) obtained within 90 days unless department lead determines is not required.

Work Experience
No experience required.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Intermediate computer skills; excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Completes competency assessments relevant to patient care. Maintains hospital-based certification educational requirements as applicable. Demonstrates knowledge of age-appropriate care and growth/development considerations for patients across the lifespan.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, and squat throughout the workday. Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist; lift up to 10 lbs from waist to overhead; lift and carry up to 40 lbs at waist height. Push/pull with up to 30 lbs of force. Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.

Repetitive use of hands (simple grasping 5–15 lbs, 20% of the workday; pushing/pulling 75–100 lbs, 10% of the day). Fine motor skills for massage and joint mobilization. Must have functional use of senses to communicate. May be exposed to electrical/chemical hazards and blood/body fluids with protective equipment as needed. Travel may be required; exposure to road and weather hazards. Operates necessary equipment.
