Position
Facilities Environmental Safety Specialist – Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, IL.
ScheduleFull time, first shift Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. Some travel required to additional sites and off‑sites.
Responsibilities- Manage and oversee portions of the Accreditation Environment of Care (TJC) and/or Physical Environment (DNV) Safety programs for multiple Advocate facilities, acting as liaison for all safety chapters and coordinating the Environment of Care or Physical Environment Committee.
- Assist with Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA), Environmental Compliance (EPA), Construction Safety, and Operations activities to maintain readiness for surveys and inspections, acting as safety point of contact during federal, state, local and organizational surveys.
- Interface with Advocate Facility Administration and Department Leadership to oversee special projects directed by Safety Leadership, presenting safety programs, updates and trainings to leadership, physicians, vendors and teammates.
- Initiate and disseminate PCRA, ICRA and ILSM documentation for projects at multiple facilities, liaising between administration, clinical departments and planning/design teams to ensure overall safety.
- Generate and submit physical environment reports, safety reports, risk assessments and corrective action plans from regulatory and accreditation surveys to leadership.
- Manage internal inspections of the physical environment, perform safety rounds of departments and grounds, and create work orders to address deficiencies.
- Assist with proper handling, storage, documentation, inspection and transportation of hazardous waste/materials within facilities, responding to spills and emergencies.
- Collaborate with other service lines on initiatives impacting patient care and safety, including injury/illness prevention, eyewash compliance, product recalls and fire drills.
- Act as first responder for incidents, maintaining on‑call readiness and serving in multiple roles during incident command events at facility and corporate level.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
Experience2–4 years or more of experience in safety and/or facilities management, including emergency management, environmental safety, and life safety.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with patients, families, agencies and the health care team.
- Sense of urgency with the ability to make sound decisions and lead by example in personal protective equipment use.
- Critical thinking, independent decision‑making and solution orientation.
- Proficiency in computer and software programs.
- Travel required; exposed to weather and road conditions.
- Requires sitting, standing, walking, lifting up to 10 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally, squatting, bending, reaching above shoulders and twisting.
- Must have functional speech, vision, smell, touch and hearing.
- Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation hazards and blood and body fluids; PPE required.
- Ability to wear and function in a Level C protective suit for training, simulation and decontamination.
Job Requirements
- Certifications:
Health Care Environmental Manager (HEM), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygiene (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other related industry certifications.
