Job Summary
Performs preventive maintenance on various types of HVAC equipment within Anne Arundel County Public Schools' facilities. The work hours can be either first shift or second shift, and the employee must be flexible enough to work all shifts as needed. This position is considered essential personnel for emergency situations, including inclement weather conditions.

- Performs preventive maintenance and diagnoses equipment for repair or replacement, including air handling units, rooftop units, exhaust fans, cooling towers, periodic filter changes, and belt changes.
- Verifies that HVAC equipment and mechanical systems are operational according to design.
- Interprets instructions, drawings, and owner’s manual specifications.
- Requisition s tools, parts, equipment, and/or supplies as needed.
- Maintains clear and complete records of completed work; these may need to be entered electronically.
- Advises Lead Preventative Maintenance Technician of difficulties on assignment and mechanical failures.
- Performs any/all duties and responsibilities normally assigned to Roving Chief Custodians and/or Facilities and Complex Engineers.
- Ensures work areas are clean and equipment is in normal operation mode.
- Participates in snow removal.
- Responds to emergencies as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
- Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent Certificate required;
Technical or Vocational School beyond high school preferred. - Experience:
Five (5) years of mechanical equipment service or operator experience in a commercial, industrial, or educational environment required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Demonstrated mechanical/electrical aptitude.
- Ability to work from verbal or written instructions, including simple floor plans and mechanical drawings.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective communication with diverse populations.
- Proficiency with business technology tools (e.g., e‑mail, AACPS intranet, Microsoft Office).
- Availability for overtime, mid‑shift, night work, and extended summer hours.
- Must provide own hand tools.
- Satisfactory score on any required test.
- Licenses &
Certifications:- Introduction to School Facilities Boiler Plant Safety & Procedures Certificate (issued by AACPS or equivalent). Completion of a related course or a passing grade is required; alternatively, a Fourth Grade Stationary Engineer License is required.
- Leadership Training or Certificate Course issued by AACPS or equivalent required upon hire.
- Class C Non‑Commercial Driver’s License (DL) issued by Maryland or the State of legal residence required; proof of a good driving record required.
- Driving Requirements:
Driving is required for bona fide Board business within the scope of employment. Use of Board vehicle is included.
- Physical Demands: standing, walking, sitting, hand use, pinching, wrist deviation, keyboarding, pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, squatting, talking, hearing, smelling, repetitive motions, eye/hand/foot coordination, and driving; each ranges between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time or less as specified.
- Vision: clear at 20 inches or less (close), clear at 20 feet or more (distance), color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment: outer and indoor environments, construction sites, confined spaces, shops, and temperature changes; outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, exposure to moving mechanical parts and high places, communicable diseases, fumes, chemicals, electrical shock, explosives, and vibration potentials are specified.
- Noise Level: moderate at most times.
- Weight & Force: lifting up to 50 pounds rarely.
- Travel Requirements: approximately 20% daily within the county.
- Must use safety devices and protective equipment to minimize work‑related accidents.
- Adheres to safe practices and methods in the operation of equipment and supplies.
- Responsible for reporting hazardous conditions within AACPS buildings or grounds.
