Full time, part-time, and substitute positions are available throughout 5 counties in New Jersey. Daytime, afternoon, evening, and overnight shifts are currently open. Our 3 agencies, Straight and Narrow (S&N), Catholic Family and Community Services (CFCS) and the Department for Persons with Disabilities (DPD) are currently hiring. The Custodian performs custodial, maintenance and delivery services in and around the facility, troubleshoots, performs minor repairs and responds to emergency calls for service, implements setup and take down for a wide variety of meetings, works closely with employees and the public to meet the custodial needs of the organization, and resolves problems to ensure efficient and safe operations.

Monday-Friday 7:00am-1:00pm

Pay

$18.00/Hr

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Pick-up and deliver items such as documents, packages, run errands, etc. as required between the Diocese of Paterson, the various Catholic Family & Community Services sites and other locations.
  • Follow a daily/weekly detailed schedule of cleaning the floors, offices, bathrooms, kitchen and coffee.
  • Attend to emergencies when necessary.
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job related equipment.
  • Dispose of garbage/rubbish/recycling.
  • Perform preventative maintenance in and around the facility. Fix and repair minor damages and report any problems that require professional assistance.
  • Report any major breakage or loss or shortage of equipment and supplies.
  • Do frequent inspections of facility, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. Ensure that there are adequate supplies.
  • Ensure that equipment and tools used in cleaning/repairing are secure and in good condition.
  • Store detergent and other toxic substances in a secure place.
  • Unload deliveries when required and move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools as needed.
  • Lock and unlock assigned facilities when not in use; check for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights, etc.
  • Take on other duties that may be assigned from time to time to support the effective and efficient operation of Catholic Charities.
  • Wax and refinish floors.
  • Fix minor plumbing and electrical issues.
Ability to
  • Operate manual and power equipment; perform physical labor; understand and carry out verbal and written directions; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for a diverse population.
Knowledge of
  • Methods of maintaining, cleaning and preserving a variety of surfaces.
  • Proper use of a wide range of chemicals according to regulations.
  • Handling and disposing of materials and trash with care.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of custodial and maintenance experience.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and in an orderly manner with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work weekends when needed, and all special events.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to Operations Director. Maintains cooperative working relationships with all employees.

Working Conditions

Must be able to perform physical activities, such as but not limited to lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing and walking. Must be able to work safely in an environment containing chemicals, cleaning materials, dust and noise. Routinely required to work under inclement weather conditions.
