Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Position OverviewAs a maintenance technician, you will inspect, repair, service, and maintain gasoline, diesel‑powered, and electronically operated mobile equipment. You will learn the inner workings of each piece of equipment, become an expert, and expand your skillset by working on new equipment daily. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands‑on work, problem‑solving, and troubleshooting.
Wage: $26.00/hr – $33.00/hr DOE with potential overtime. The wage scale is the full wage scale an individual can earn based on performance, experience, and seniority.

- Analyze malfunctions, repair, rebuild, and maintain equipment
- Travel to Hermiston, OR shop as needed
- Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects
- Dismantle and reassemble equipment using hoists and hand tools
- Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges
- Replace defective engines and subassemblies (e.g., transmissions)
- Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency
- Direct workers cleaning parts and assisting with assembly/disassembly of equipment
- Record keeping of time and parts used on appropriate forms
- Perform general cleaning of work and maintenance areas
- Assist other maintenance staff to assure vehicle operation efficiency
- Communicate promptly to supervisors on any material flaws
- Take action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions
- Perform other tasks and duties as assigned to meet business needs
- Maintain regular and timely attendance
- Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment
Minimum qualifications:
- Safety‑minded professional with good performance, punctuality, and attendance
- 1–2 years of experience
- Experience with diesel trucks, trailers, and air brakes
- Must pass pre‑employment physical exam and controlled substance testing
- Conform to and maintain OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and other company/state rules and regulations
- Work independently without direct supervision
- Communicate well with supervisors, truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, and other employees
- Follow written and/or verbal instructions
- Willingness to learn and work a variety of job tasks
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work weekends and all shifts during busy season
- Good depth perception and coordination to operate machine controls
- Valid driver's license
Preferred qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Previous fleet equipment experience preferred
- Frequent sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment
- Frequent stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above shoulders
- Occasional lift/move up to 50–75 lbs; vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception
- Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather, extreme cold and/or heat
- Noise level usually moderate to loud
- Company provides necessary PPE; employee must provide steel‑toed or composite‑toed boots
