Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director of Logistics, the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Technician is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the purchase, maintenance, repair, and issuance of new and reserve gear; planning, organizing, and directing the purchase and issuance of uniforms; and inspecting and maintaining gear. May train other employees to perform some of these tasks.

Essential Functions:

Duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following (but not limited to):

  • Performs and/or coordinates an annual advanced inspection of all District-issued PPE, including bunker coats, bunker pants, structural helmets, hoods, gloves, boots, and all wildland and swift water gear.
  • Evaluates, coordinates, and executes repair of all District-issued PPE including bunker coats, bunker pants, structural helmets, hoods, gloves, boots, and all wildland gear.
  • Coordinates and executes reserve gear issuance while member's gear is being repaired, advanced cleaned, or requires a special incident procedure.
  • Documents and records inspections, advanced cleanings, repairs, replacements, retirement, contaminated, or special incident procedures for each member issued PPE including bunker coats, bunker pants, structural helmets, hoods, gloves, boots, and all wildland gear in the District's Records Management System (RMS).
  • Ensures laundry facility equipment is operational in accordance with approved project SOPs.
  • Inspects repair work completed by vendors.
  • Maintains records of equipment inspections and repairs per legal requirements, established standards, and regulations.
  • Documents and records equipment, maintenance, and testing information in the District's RMS.
  • Maintains inventory of unassigned PPE, ensuring minimum stock of critical items for replacement to ensure no lapse in operational capability.
  • Plans and executes purchases within the PPE budget, under supervision of the program manager or appointed officer.
  • Performs and/or coordinates the issuance of PPE and training on the function and care thereof to new or returning personnel.
  • Maintains continuing education for self and personnel on the current standards of use and care as set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and/or Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodation, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of the testing, maintenance, and repair of District-issued PPE.
  • Knowledge of record management systems.
  • Knowledge of cost estimate review, vendor bid process preparation and review, and vendor warranties.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to inspect and troubleshoot District-issued PPE.
  • Ability to maintain comprehensive repair and service records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with District employees, public officials, public, vendors, suppliers, and staff members of other agencies.
  • Ability to compile and prepare on-going and ad hoc equipment statistical data, records, and reports using District software.
