SUMMARYThe Grounds Equipment Operator/Chief supervises and assists assigned staff in operating and maintaining equipment used in the maintenance of District and campus grounds. Coordinates, schedules, implements and participates in a variety of grounds maintenance activities. Operates within established budget guidelines and ensures proper timing and completion of jobs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Supervises and works with assigned personnel to repair and maintain facilities and grounds equipment.
- Performs planting, transplanting, fertilizing, and trimming of trees; maintains parking lots; repairs and replaces fencing as needed. Maintains athletic fields by performing grading and leveling.
- Drives and operates vehicles and equipment to include dump truck, front end loader, trencher/backhoe, mower, jackhammer, cement mixer, and large tractor mower with a variety of attachments. Cement grinding machine, cement walk behind saw, Lift truck.
- Coordinates, schedules, implements and performs maintenance and repair activities based on work orders to ensure proper timing and completion of jobs.
- Estimates cost of materials and labor in relation to job; coordinates with contractors, facility planning and District trades, assists in development of District specifications.
- Monitors work in progress and inspects work completed by contractors and District trade staff prior to approval and acceptance.
- Reviews and interprets blueprints, specifications, and other documents related to remodels and new construction to ensure compliance with City and State codes and District guidelines.
- Ensures budgeting guidelines are met by prioritizing shop expenditures and reviewing credit card statements and receipts.
- Maintains inventory, requisitions supplies, as necessary. Purchases materials for jobs; obtains approval from supervisor for major purchases. Maintains paperwork (electronic or hard copy) and processing of work orders.
- Makes and coordinates emergency service calls for District trade staff. Assists other departments with tasks and projects as needed.
- Oversees maintenance and repair of equipment, tools and vehicles to ensure shop is safe and clean.
- Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies; performs all other related duties as required or assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND five years of grounds maintenance experience which includes heavy equipment operation; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; AND one year of supervisory experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTSA valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement is required. Must possess an active Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card or obtain one within the first 90 workdays of employment.
