The Aviation Mechanic provides routine maintenance and repair on all office owned and operated fixed wing and rotorcraft aircraft with a heavy emphasis on the rotorcraft experience. The Aviation Mechanic is responsible for ensuring safety for both the general public and the Sheriff's Office pilot core, all while meeting the Federal Aviation Administration standards and regulations.
Position QualificationsEducation
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
Experience
- Possession of a current Mechanic's license with airframe and power plant ratings issued by the FAA.
- Three (3) years of experience in repair and maintenance of rotorcraft/helicopter aircraft.
- Knowledge and experience working with both piston and turbine powered aircraft.
Combined education and experience qualifications
- Other combinations of education or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year‑by‑year basis.
Other requirements
- Must possess a current Mechanic's license with airframe and power plant ratings as issued by the FAA.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.
- Training with the exception of an Arizona driver's license to be provided on‑the‑job: FEMA NIMS IS100 & 700, OSHA training, ADP payroll training, PREA training.
- Prior to hiring, candidates must pass a background review.
Preferred qualifications
- Bell Helicopter Factory School Training and/or experience maintaining Bell 407, Bell 429 or other Bell Helicopters.
- Current FAA Inspection Authorization and/or Arizona CDL with Hazmat certification.

- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on fixed wing and rotorcraft owned by MCSO.
- Conduct periodic inspections and maintain operational status of office aircraft.
- Operate precision measuring devices and special tools.
- Order, retrieve, and maintain stock of spare parts and supplies.
- Maintain aircraft maintenance records and documentation.
- Document aircraft parts and component records.
- Provide and sustain organization of hangar and office area.
- Perform routine fuel samples on office fuel trailers and trucks.
- Maintain valid mechanic's license with airframe and power plant ratings required by FAA.
- Obtain FAA inspection authorization within the first three years of employment.
- Participate in on‑call calendar for unscheduled aircraft maintenance.
- Be present at work site to perform tasks as scheduled and assigned by the supervisor.
- Indoor and outdoor in varying weather conditions.
- Manual dexterity required; manual labor with machinery, frequent interruptions, high work volume.
- Travel to job locations during scheduled workday.
- Concentration, accuracy, and ethical conduct required.
- Sitting, standing, walking, driving a vehicle, talking, hearing, seeing, reading, climbing ladders, crawling, reaching, twisting.
- Physical demands: lift up to 100 pounds floor‑to‑waist, 75 pounds waist‑to‑shoulder, 50 pounds shoulder‑to‑overhead; carry 50 pounds up to 100 feet; push/pull 200 pounds up to 2000 feet.
