Custodian III

Location: Mountain Trail Middle School

Duration: 10 months, 8 hours/day

Grade: 13, $15.44/hour

Position Type: Non-Interim

Start Date: 7/7/2026

Purpose Statement

The job of Custodian III is performed to support the educational process with specific responsibilities for custodial services at an assigned elementary school; ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; overseeing the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and campus events; scheduling assigned contracted custodians; and ensuring that assignments were completed properly.

Functions
  • Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc.
  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Consults with administrative personnel for planning, prioritizing and scheduling custodial activities.
  • Coordinates facility preparation with contracted custodial services for extra-curricular and community activities.
  • Delivers a variety of items (supplies, mail, packages, furniture) to the appropriate parties.
  • Inspects facilities to ensure safety, cleanliness, and identify required repairs.
  • Maintains documents, files and records (schedules, inventory, calendar of events).
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops).
  • Monitors students and staff in and around work areas to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Orders equipment, supplies and materials to maintain availability and complete jobs efficiently.
  • Performs minor maintenance repairs and tasks (e.g., changing lights, moving furniture, unclogging toilets).
  • Prepares the site for daily operations (opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkways).
  • Prepares written materials (requisitions, safety inspections, work orders).
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and visitors.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (facility damage, vandalism, alarms).
  • Schedules maintenance activities and contracted services personnel.
  • Supports other site maintenance staff (grounds, trades).
  • Supports campus work projects (Community Education, PTA, PTO, contractors).
  • Trains assigned personnel on equipment handling, chemical use, and safety practices.
  • Transports tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure availability at the job site.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills required include monitoring electrical and mechanical systems, operating industrial maintenance equipment, assembling or repairing classroom equipment, operating a computer and software applications, and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge required includes basic math, written procedure comprehension, chemical storage and use guidelines, industrial cleaning methods, plumbing, electrical, painting, and safety practices.

Abilities required include scheduling activities, collecting data, interacting with diverse individuals, problem solving, adapting to changing priorities, meeting deadlines, and maintaining rapport with students, staff and community.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and coordinating others; utilizing resources from other work units as needed; and having the opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job requires approximately 10% sitting, 80% walking, and 10% standing. It is performed under temperature extremes and with exposure to risk of injury and illness.
