Building Maintenance Worker

The Building Maintenance Worker maintains the physical integrity of facilities by performing custodial, groundskeeper, semi-skilled building maintenance, and repair duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs general campus, buildings, grounds, and custodial maintenance and repairs
  • Checks and monitors heating and cooling units
  • Power washes sidewalks and building exteriors
  • Clears walkways
  • Cleans hazardous material spills and bodily fluids as needed
  • Operates security alarm systems to arm and disarm buildings as needed
  • Opens campus by unlocking doors and gates
  • Orders, receives, controls, and issues maintenance supplies and equipment
  • Paints classrooms and other areas; replaces light switches; replaces floor and ceiling tiles; changes filters for evaporative coolers and HVAC units; inspects fire extinguishers
  • Performs grounds maintenance and landscaping duties such as mowing, trimming, caring for plants, grass, shrubs, and trees, raking, mulching, fertilizing, and weeding
  • In the event of the absence of the Campus Facility Supervisor, maintains and supervises daily campus activities and maintenance staff
  • Provides set up for campus activities and rentals
  • Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies; performs all other related duties as required or assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years of building maintenance or custodial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:

  • Skill in performing general preventative and corrective building and grounds repairs and maintenance
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Ability to follow established safety policies, procedures, and practices
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments with minimum supervision
  • Skill in understanding, explaining, and applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including but not limited to interacting tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Commitment to create and sustain a thriving learning and working environment for students and staff
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to use initiative within organizational policies, procedures and guidelines

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Work is performed throughout campuses and District facilities, both indoors and outdoors. Work requires exposure to hot and cold temperatures, potentially dangerous tools and equipment, and hazardous chemicals. Physical ability to perform all of the essential functions (e.g. stand, turn, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach, lift, push, pull, and, work at heights, climb ladders). May be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
