The custodian is responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility, providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events, and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.
Required Qualifications- High school diploma, GED or equivalent
- Social Security Card
- Proof of immunity to Measles and German Measles
- Valid picture
- Fingerprint/background clearance (upon employment)
- Job‑related experience
- Arranges furnishings and equipment to provide adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events
- Attends in‑service training (e.g. new methods, equipment, blood‑borne pathogens, etc.) to gain information on new or improved methods and/or equipment
- Clears school facilities (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment
- Evaluates situations (e.g., involving other staff, students, parents, the public) and takes appropriate action or directs to appropriate personnel for resolution
- Informs students, other site personnel and supervisors regarding activities, safety and proper maintenance of facilities
- Inspects school site to ensure safety and cleanliness and identifies necessary repairs due to vandalism
- Oversees general helper(s) to maximize work‑force efficiency and meet shift requirements
- Prepares reports (e.g. work orders, requisitions, etc.) to document information
- Repairs various items (e.g., plumbing, irrigation, door locks, etc.) to ensure items are available and in safe working condition
- Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities
- Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured students, broken windows, fights, etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns
- Secures facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, loss and/or liability and ensure safety at work site
- Assists other personnel as required to support them in completing their work activities
- Performs such other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent/Designee
Skills are required to perform multiple, non‑technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills include: utilizing equipment used in the profession. Knowledge is required for basic math, understanding written procedures, writing routine documents, and speaking clearly. Ability is required for scheduling activities, collating data, considering multiple factors when using equipment, and working with a wide diversity of individuals.
The job also requires problem‑solving abilities, adherence to safety practices, communication with diverse groups, and meeting deadlines and schedules.
Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices, leading, guiding, and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job’s functions.
Work EnvironmentThe usual and customary physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and some finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking, and 25% standing. The job involves temperature extremes and hazardous conditions.
