About This Position

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 Trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

The City of Phoenix seeks qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator II position. This position performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks associated with the delivery and repair of refuse containers. Employees are responsible for the receipt and inventory of all containers and associated parts and operating equipment necessary in the delivery, disposal, and repair of containers.

Ideal Candidate
  • Ability to inspect and check vehicle before use in order to ensure safe operating conditions.
  • Ability to maintain equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to make sound decisions about equipment operation based on fundamental knowledge of automotive mechanics.
Salary

Pay Range: $20.92 - $32.46 per hour.

Hiring Range: $20.92 - $28.04 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
  • (1) Completion of a departmental training course for the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators II
  • OR (2) be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator II
  • OR (3) log 120 hours on equipment similar to that used in the specific division
  • OR (4) have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment under two tons, on the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators II in the specific division.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Commercial Driver's License A is required within the first 12 months of employment; current CDL is desired.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of experience operating commercial equipment.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Experience working in streets, traffic, and around the public.
  • Experience with a general tree care company or landscape operations.
