The Maintenance Manager provides both strategic leadership and hands-on operational oversight for the Maintenance Department to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all production equipment, facilities, and building systems. This role is responsible for driving equipment reliability, operational uptime, preventative and predictive maintenance initiatives, cost control, and continuous improvement efforts that support overall business and production objectives. Partnering closely with Production, Engineering, Quality, Safety, and Operations leadership, the Maintenance Manager develops and executes maintenance strategies focused on improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), minimizing downtime, reducing reactive maintenance events, and enhancing overall operational performance.
This position is also accountable for departmental performance through the management of measurable KPIs, workforce development, inventory control, vendor relationships, regulatory compliance, and the implementation of proactive maintenance and reliability programs.
JOB FUNCTION/PURPOSE
- Lead and oversee daily operations of the Maintenance Department to ensure equipment, machinery, and facilities operate safely and efficiently.
- Develop and implement maintenance strategies that improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and support production goals.
- Establish and monitor department KPIs and performance metrics.
- Partner with Production, Engineering, Quality, and Operations teams to support operational efficiency and continuous improvement.
- Forecast equipment, staffing, and budget needs on an annual basis.
- Manage department budgets, maintenance costs, and inventory levels.
- Oversee preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities for all production equipment and facility systems.
- Ensure machines and equipment are maintained in safe and dependable operating condition.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and support timely repairs to minimize downtime.
- Review completed work orders and monitor maintenance work for quality and efficiency.
- Coordinate manpower assignments, prioritize work orders, and schedule maintenance activities.
- Recommend and implement improvements to machine performance, reliability, and safety.
- Ensure maintenance work and machine modifications comply with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Communicate with production staff to support efficient operations and minimize disruptions.
- Manage the ordering, receiving, and inventory of maintenance parts and supplies.
- Maintain proper spare parts inventory levels to support operations.
- Obtain quotes from vendors for parts, equipment, and outside services.
- Assist with vendor management and equipment purchasing decisions.
- Monitor and improve department performance through KPIs, including:
- Equipment uptime and downtime
- Preventative maintenance completion
- Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
- Work order completion rates
- Maintenance costs and budget performance
- Safety performance and compliance
- Analyze maintenance data and identify opportunities for operational improvement and cost reduction.
- Train, supervise, coach, and evaluate maintenance employees.
- Support employee development and identify training needs.
- Participate in onboarding and training new hires.
- Maintain clear processes, procedures, and training documentation.
- Address performance concerns and administer corrective action when necessary.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a strong safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
- Promote safe work practices and ensure safety features on equipment are properly used.
- Participate in safety inspections, audits, and corrective action efforts.
- Perform related duties and special projects as needed.
- Support facility and operational initiatives assigned by Management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES
- 3 years of Maintenance Supervision. Considerable experience in the repair and maintenance of industrial equipment and machinery.
- Considerable knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance, millwright knowledge, repair and operation procedures.
- Ability to identify equipment problems and apply trouble-shooting procedures in diagnosing the cause of equipment failures or needed repairs.
- Ability to operate on a strategic level.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with subordinates and other departmental representatives.
- Ability to train, supervise, motivate and evaluate assigned employees.
- Hands-on maintenance experience (equipment,facilities, troubleshooting).
- Leadership & people management
- Preventative maintenance systems experience (CMMS)
- Safety & compliance knowledge (OSHA, etc.)
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical or related field preferred but certainly not required. What matters most is experience.
