Position Definition

Perform custodial work involving the care, maintenance, and cleaning of rooms, office space, buildings, and related facilities; assist in maintaining the safety and security of district and college facilities.

Distinguishing Characteristics
  • Custodian I – Entry level; routine, standardized tasks.
  • Custodian II – Journey level; full range of duties; knowledge of custodial methods; use of vacuums, buffers, power strippers.
  • Custodian, Lead – Lead and provide direction to staff.
Essential Duties
  • Sweep, mop, wax, buff and polish floors; dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures and equipment.
  • Wash windows, walkways, walls and remove graffiti.
  • Clean and disinfect toilets, sinks, mirrors, hand plates, dispensers, fountains, glass doors and windows according to prescribed methods.
  • Stock paper in restrooms; fill soap dispensers.
  • Empty trash receptacles; wash when soiled; reline receptacles with bags as needed.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up rooms for special meetings or classes.
  • Secure facilities at end of shift, including locking doors, windows and setting alarms.
  • Maintain and distribute supplies in custodial stations; load truck and manage inventory.
  • Operate floor maintenance equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs, including changing light bulbs and lamps.
  • Assist in training other custodial staff.
  • Dispose of hazardous and e-waste materials.
  • Prepare work orders using a computer.
  • Maintain proper cleanliness standards in assigned areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Experience and Training

One year of experience performing custodial duties in a similar environment.

Education / License or Certificate
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid California driver's license.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in building cleaning.
  • Floor and carpet cleaning, wall and fixture care.
  • Restroom disinfecting and sanitizing.
  • Safe work practices and operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Operate and maintain custodial power equipment.
  • Work independently and use sound judgment.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Identify and handle chemicals appropriately.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with staff and students.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity and respect for all individuals.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with restroom cleaning and sanitation.
  • Experience with daily floor cleaning and maintenance.
  • Experience with trash collection and removal.
  • Experience using and maintaining custodial equipment.
  • Experience performing top-to-bottom deep cleaning tasks.
