Custodian

Pittsburg State University is accepting applications for a Custodian in the Facility Operations department. The primary function is to clean and sanitize campus buildings and facilities, including classrooms, offices, student housing, and any other facility or space owned or maintained by the University, including outdoor space.

• 40% Office, classroom, and facilities maintenance
  • Vacuum, bonnet, and extract carpeted areas using automatic equipment with proper chemical mix and mechanical adjustment.
  • Use dust tool to clean tile floors.
  • Wet mop stains and spots on tiled floors using pail method and semi‑automatic scrubbers.
  • Empty trash, clean containers, and replace liners (special care required in research and lab areas to avoid needle pricks or chemical exposure).
  • Dust furniture, blinds, and other surfaces.
  • Cleans glass, ledges, chalk, and dry marker boards.
  • Replace light bulbs.
• 15% Restrooms / shower cleaning
  • Clean and disinfect sinks, stools, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles, and trash containers with training in handling blood‑borne pathogens.
  • Polish fixtures, wet mop floors, and clean all surfaces.
  • Replace soap and paper goods.
  • Clean floor drains and add water weekly.
  • Scrub walls and toilets periodically.
  • Use proper safety gear and avoid mixing chemicals that could react.
• 10% Hallways, stairways, elevators, entrances, and exteriors
  • Dust, mop, scrub, and burnish with automatic scrubber and burnisher.
  • Wet mop spots and stains on tiled areas and floor mats.
  • Spot clean walls, doors, carpets, jambs, and kick plates.
  • Wash windows and rails.
  • Dust and polish surfaces.
  • Remove unauthorized postings.
  • Clean fire extinguisher cases and check charges.
  • Clean display cases, commons area furniture, and public telephones.
  • Clean exterior entrance ways daily.
  • Sweep snow and ice from outside entrances.
  • Check and maintain exterior drains, dock areas, and handicap ramps.
• 10% Floor maintenance
  • Strip carpet with automatic equipment and chemical detergent scrubs in non‑carpeted areas.
  • Burnish tile floors with automatic burnisher.
  • Bonnets and deep extracts carpeted areas using mechanical extractors.
  • Cleans and maintains specialty floors such as wood, cork, quarry tile in high‑profile buildings.
  • Use cleaning chemicals properly to avoid damage and bio‑hazard exposure.
• 10% Supplies, chemicals, and equipment maintenance
  • Maintain clean, organized, and stocked supply closet.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Follow safety procedures for volatile chemicals and understand MSDS sheets.
• 15% Related work
  • Locks and unlocks building doors.
  • Follows all safety policies regarding use of safety procedures and equipment.
  • Assists in special university events and emergencies.
  • Reports building repair needs and suspicious events to university police and supervisor.
  • Reports and turns in lost items.
  • Raises and lowers flags in certain university buildings.
  • Participates in training sessions, in‑service classes, staff meetings, and committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

• High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred

Education and Experience:

One year of related experience.
