Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,461 - $3,898

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

University Housing Services (UHS), a department within the Division of Student Affairs, provides a comprehensive residential experience for more than 2,800 students living in on‑campus housing communities. UHS oversees residential life, business operations, facilities management, conference services, and information systems. The department manages an annual operating budget of approximately $30 million, invests more than $2 million annually in capital improvements, and employs 50 full‑time staff members supported by approximately 150 student employees and student leaders.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain residence halls’ restrooms/showers; clean and polish sinks, clean and disinfect commodes, clean and disinfect urinals, clean mirrors, dust, remove graffiti, clean partitions, sweep and mop quarry tile floors, terrazzo floors, clean and disinfect shower curtains, empty waste receptacles, check and fill dispensers, and when needed, wash walls, ceilings, air‑vents, and lockers. Relocate trash dumpsters for pick up.
  • Clean and maintain exterior/interior stairwells, entryways, and landings; sweep, mop, dust, high‑dust, remove gum/graffiti, empty trash receptacles, wash windows, dust window ledges, clean and polish handrails, vacuum entry mats, clean doors, and clean doorjambs.
  • Clean and maintain residence hallways, lounges, laundry rooms, and offices; spot‑clean walls; dust; clean drinking fountains/bottle‑filling stations, mirrors, and microwaves; spot‑clean carpets; vacuum; remove gum; and empty trash. Shampoo carpet as directed or needed.
  • Safe handling and use of cleaning chemicals, safe use of equipment and hand tools, safeguard buildings and/or equipment from unauthorized use, cooperate with hall staff and students in creating a safe and clean environment, work in teams/crews, stock custodial supplies and closets, initiate and complete work orders.
  • Periodically perform floor care in residence hall, use of various floor care equipment (i.e. vacuum, hot water extractor, wet vacuum, 175 RPM floor machine); sweeping, carpet extraction, stripping and scrubbing resilient tile and asphalt tile floors, carpet spotting, carpet repairs, mopping, spray buffing, applying floor finish, and bonnet cleaning. Clean and maintain student rooms, including windows, vertical blinds, polishing and cleaning furniture, washing walls, ceilings, light fixtures, doors, and doorjambs, and vacuuming and carpet spotting.
  • Periodically perform light maintenance in residence hall facilities such as lamp replacement, unclog commodes/urinals, work with common hand tools (i.e. plunger, screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, and wrenches), service vacuum cleaners (i.e. replace belt, empty vacuum bag, clean brush), move/set up furniture, tables, chairs, and miscellaneous furniture.
  • Participate in University, Division of Student Affairs, and UHS staff meetings and serves on department committees as requested. Assist with emergency evacuation drills and emergencies as needed. Must be available for call‑out in case of emergencies.
Qualifications
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety; operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two‑way radios for communication; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required;

    perform work involving regular physical activity; and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships. Some positions may require the ability to move up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous work experience in community living environments such as colleges/universities, hotels, apartment complexes, nursing homes, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper use and safety of cleaning chemicals.
  • Communication skills (i.e. ability to follow oral and written instructions).
  • Able to work independently and/or with team members and student workers.
  • Must be able to use a computer/iPad to check email, input attendance, and document work‑related tasks such as work orders.
  • Work well with college student populations, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to operate various custodial equipment (i.e. vacuum 175‑rpm floor machine, and self‑contained carpet extractor).
  • Ability to accept change regularly in work shift schedules, duties, and assignments.
