Overview
The position is responsible for the supervision and direction of the site welding team. The incumbent works with suppliers, customers, and site leadership to identify, research, and develop welding and process improvement plans, reviews site-welding metrics, and uses root cause analysis and corrective actions to improve welding operations. The incumbent also manages and stores site welding records and documents per applicable quality procedures.
Responsibilities- Direct the site welding team (typically the weld instructor and technician(s)) and attend daily production meetings to ensure welding KPIs are met and sustained.
- Travel up to 20% locally as required.
- Maintain working knowledge of AWS Codes D1.1, D1.2, D1.4, D1.5, and CSA standards.
- Write, review, approve, and control welding procedures, work instructions, and other welding documents.
- Interview welding candidates and determine skill level through evaluation processes.
- Provide one-on-one coaching and training support to new and existing welding staff.
- Assist with qualification and training of welding personnel and associated recordkeeping.
- Provide technical support for customer concerns, third-party audits, and site concerns.
- Analyze QA reports and perform root cause analysis and corrective actions for welding processes.
- Perform process audits to ensure compliance and performance.
- Support other duties as assigned and contribute to continuous improvement of welding management KPIs.
- Improve welding management KPIs, assist in reducing waste, and optimize welding processes and joint design to improve efficiency.
- Implement poka-yoke (mistake-proofing) methods and review product design for manufacturability.
- Monitor and reduce usage of welding consumables; ensure all welding equipment meets compliance standards.
- Maintain knowledge of welding processes: GMAW, FCAW, SMAW, SAW, GTAW; HLAW (when applicable); HFRW (when applicable); and oxyfuel/plasma and laser cutting.
- Bachelors with 6+ years relevant experience or associate’s degree with 8+ years relevant experience or 10+ years relevant experience.
- Ability to obtain Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Certified Welding Educator (CWE), and Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS) accreditations.
- Previous training experience and ability to read, write, and communicate clearly; ability to speak and instruct groups in various settings.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; strong safety mindset and adherence to Valmont safety policies.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access).
- Five years of leadership experience (preferred for highly qualified candidates).
- Welding Supervisor accreditation from the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) is a plus.
- Industrial shop setting with standard PPE; ability to stand for extended periods; frequent use of hands and arms; frequent movement around the shop.
- Ergonomic practices required; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds (most frequent up to 20 pounds).
- Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
- Working conditions may include heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice; exposure to high noise areas and other hazards.
