Job Summary

This position performs a variety of basic maintenance, groundskeeping, and utility tasks.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

Performs a variety of specialized activities in assigned area of responsibility, which may include: sorting and distributing mail, packages, and deliveries; applying herbicides and pesticides to grounds in order to eradicate weeds and pests; and, performing other related activities.

Performing routine and preventative maintenance activities, which may include: identifying problems and implementing routine repairs; repairing and painting interior and exterior walls to maintain facility aesthetics; maintaining and repairing sprinkler systems; maintaining and repairing landscape equipment; and, performing other related activities. Observe campus buildings and properties and communicate problems or situations which need attention to the appropriate individual(s).

Operates and maintains a variety of maintenance equipment and tools.

Monitors available inventory and notifies appropriate individual(s) when stock levels reach specified levels.

Performs a variety of manual labor activities, which may include: gathering materials and equipment; placing materials in proper locations; moving furniture and equipment; assembling furniture; removing snow and ice from walkways; setting up and tearing down items for campus meetings and events; and, performing other related activities.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Required Training and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and at least one year of relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Valid U.S. driver's license

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Basic facilities cleaning and grounds maintenance principles;

Chemicals and chemical mixtures;

Safety and security procedures;

Applicable equipment and tools;

Applicable chemicals and their usage.

Safe motor vehicle operating practices and procedures.

Skill in:

Maintaining a safe and healthy working environment;

Reading and comprehending Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS);

Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, buildings, and other facilities;

Proper handling of chemicals;

Using applicable tools and equipment;

Monitoring grounds and facilities for safety hazards;

Safely operating motor vehicles including buses;

Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Very Heavy Work:
Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, intense noises and travel. May require weekend, evening, holiday work.
