Industrial Maintenance Mechanic

Wheeling, IL, US

Shift: 1st shift, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Summary / Objective

Performs diversified duties across electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, plumbing, and building trades. Troubleshoots and repairs machines, processes, and systems related to the maintenance function of the manufacturing facility. Works with the health and safety department to ensure employee safety is maintained at acceptable levels.

Key tools, machines, and materials – hand tools, machinist tools, meters, gauges, precision measuring instruments, electrical test equipment, milling machine, grinder, lathe, welding equipment, valves, sensors, and related maintenance materials including diagrams, blueprints, equipment manuals, lubricants, cleaning agents, chemicals, log sheets, and manifests.

Essential functions
  • Installs equipment and processes as they relate to the manufacturing of medical devices using sketches, drawings, and prints.
  • Maintains preventive maintenance (PM) performance and KPI for maintenance through maintenance software.
  • Performs water treatment and monitors discharge to the sewer system; documents activities to meet federal and state compliance regulations.
  • Maintains and cleans systems and equipment as required.
  • Maintains a clean working area according to 6S methodology.
  • Performs minor/major repairs to buildings, systems and equipment, including electrical & mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, boiler systems, and grounds maintenance.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Maintains inventories and orders materials as needed.
  • Safely works with a wide variety of precision hand and power tools.
  • Assists with industrial hygiene studies related to employee safety (e.g., hearing conservation, ventilation studies).
  • Completes in-house calibration, maintains logs, and records data related to GMP, ISO, FDA, OSHA, EPA, DEP, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
Mechanical
  • Maintains mechanical and electrical systems related to maintenance, repair, and improvement of industrial machinery.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
  • Reads and understands diagrams, blueprints, equipment manuals, metals, chemicals, and other materials used in maintenance.
  • Uses precision tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, dial indicators) and alignment tooling; fabricates basic parts using hand and power tools.
  • Designs control systems and builds control panels for specialty equipment used in manufacturing.
  • Demonstrates basic welding knowledge and application.
Electrical
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical control circuits for motors and production equipment.
  • Troubleshoots PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and related software and hardware; makes recommendations and software changes.
  • Works from prints, diagrams, specifications, and instructions for emergency and scheduled repairs; understands ladder logic.
Instrumentation
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, overhauls, calibrates, and tests a wide variety of instrumentation (transmitters, actuators, sensors, encoders, potentiometers, meters, tubing, control valves) for reliability and uptime.
  • Reads and interprets wiring tasks according to specifications and schematics for installation and repair of equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery; basic computer usage.

Education and experience
  • 3+ years of work experience, preferably in manufacturing
  • Successful completion of an approved formal apprenticeship program in this field or equivalent work experience / on-the-job training
Preferred education and experience
  • Work at heights greater than ten feet and perform heavy manual labor (e.g., moving heavy objects, up to 50 lbs or more, over long distances)
  • Ability to climb ladders, bend, twist, kneel, crawl, pull/push, stand, walk, and squat in varying temperatures
