Overview
The Maintenance Technician series maintain and repair equipment, machinery, appliances, utilities, buildings, facilities, fixtures, and systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Duties are highly diversified across the department. Successful candidates will occasionally travel to the Monument Valley site in a university vehicle to perform periodic maintenance and repairs.
Responsibilities- Organize and oversee day‑to‑day maintenance requests to keep buildings and equipment functioning.
- Respond to work orders promptly.
- Perform corrective and preventive building maintenance, including basic plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and electrical.
- Conduct field checks of buildings to identify and analyze maintenance modifications.
- Maintain and repair recreation equipment (weights, pools, treadmills, ellipticals).
- Maintain and repair mechanical equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
- Comply with department, state, and federal safety and compliance regulations.
- Repair and monitor safety equipment such as fire “Exit” signs and emergency doors.
- Perform periodic checks of fire and smoke alarms.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of custodial equipment, chemicals, paper products, and supplies.
- Inspect and perform routine preventive maintenance on all custodial equipment, including floor scrubbers, vacuums, and burnishers.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance dates, repair costs, and types of maintenance performed.
- Participate in daily and project cleaning duties (vacuuming, mopping, trash removal).
- Perform snow removal as assigned.
- Carry out miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
- Perform routine janitorial and custodial cleaning to maintain a clean, safe, and professional building environment.
- Occasional travel to the Monument Valley site in a university vehicle.
- Two years of experience in corrective and preventive building and equipment maintenance.
- Valid driver’s license to operate university vehicles and transport materials.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Manage time effectively and follow detailed instructions.
- Work well as part of a team or individually.
- Understand general maintenance processes and methods.
- Knowledge of electricity, carpentry, plumbing, and other technical skills.
- Knowledge of cleaning solutions, chemicals, and solvents.
- Troubleshoot problems and plan solutions.
- Read and understand equipment manuals to perform required maintenance and service.
- Apply proper cleaning techniques and standards.
- Complete routine paperwork accurately.
- Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, carpet extractors, and burnishers.
- Follow safe work practices.
- Use hand and power tools common to trade.
- Basic computer skills.
- Customer service skills.
- Effective communication.

Employees must have sufficient strength for heavy lifting (50 pounds), pushing, and pulling of heavy objects, and be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, squatting, walking, bending, and stooping. The work environment may include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
This position requires nearly continuous standing, repetitive hand motions, and reaching overhead, and may expose employees to extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
