Position Details
Salary: $16.72 - $20.20 per hour (GS.3)
Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 6:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. (EST)
Work Location: 1005 East 12th Street, Chattanooga, TN
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Department: Public Works – Fleet
Incumbents in this classification are responsible for performing miscellaneous labor in the Department of Public Works. Work is performed under close supervision (although most tasks are routine so little supervision is required).
Essential Functions- Perform assorted public works duties such as sweeping sidewalks and streets, blowing and raking leaves, collecting or picking up brush, garbage and recycling materials.
- Participate in seasonal work such as ice and snow removal.
- Operate leaf blowers to remove leaves from various structures and landscapes, sweep sidewalks and entryways.
- Stow scrap metal, deliver and retrieve vehicles from privately operated shops, pick up parts, supplies and mail.
- Clean and maintain various City facilities, buildings and landscapes including cleaning restrooms, sweeping, mopping floors, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, operating specialized cleaning equipment, washing windows, removing trash and litter, collecting recycle.
- Operate various hand and power tools requiring no special training or skill, and maintain minor equipment.
- Use, carry, and answer their cell phone as determined by job duties and department head.
- Maintain regular attendance and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers and citizens.
- Accomplish essential functions in a timely manner, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Must report to or remain at work during inclement weather situations, even when administrative closings are announced.
Specific Duties (Facilities)
- Set up and break down tables and chairs for scheduled meetings.
- Maintain dumpster enclosures.
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, understand simple processes, and routine operation of power tools and small maintenance equipment. High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required; any combination of equivalent experience and education acceptable.
Licensing and Certifications- Valid driver's license may be required depending on assignment.
Knowledge of construction, grounds or building maintenance principles and practices; applicable equipment, materials and tools used in construction, grounds or building maintenance activities and safe work practices. Skill in following oral and written instructions, performing routine maintenance and construction tasks, operating and maintaining applicable equipment and tools, and communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
Physical DemandsPositions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
Work EnvironmentMedium work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gasses, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
