THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION (9 MONTHS OR LESS) – PAYING $18.00 - $19.00 PER HOUR. EMPLOYMENT STARTS 03/01/2026 THROUGH 10/31/2026

COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE (CPW)

Perform boat inspector and decontaminator responsibilities according to state regulations and standard protocols at Cortez Port of Entry.

NON LEAD Inspector

Perform boat inspector and decontaminator responsibilities according to state regulations and standard protocols at Cortez Port of Entry. Work will either be completed independently or in pairs to inspect boats entering the State of Colorado with respect to invasive species such as zebra/quagga mussels. Provide public outreach on the aquatic invasive species topic by providing printed material to those visiting or returning to Colorado.

The position will report directly to the inspection station. Boat inspection training will be provided. Early morning, evening & weekend work required.

Lead Inspector

Perform boat inspector and decontaminator responsibilities according to state regulations and standard protocols at Cortez Point of Entry in Cortez, Colorado. The lead boat inspector will be responsible for providing on-the-job training to inspection staff, creating schedules and ensuring all shifts are covered during operational hours, collecting and verifying accurate time‑keeping records for payroll purposes, maintaining inventory of all required supplies, and assisting with interviewing candidates for employment.

Additional responsibilities include working with a supervisor to resolve challenges with staff and customers, ensuring inspection station staff are following standardized protocols, ensuring that data entry is performed accurately and completely by all staff, performing basic maintenance and troubleshooting on power washer/decontamination unit, and providing public outreach on aquatic invasive species. Early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work is required.

MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS

Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle must maintain a safe driving record and a valid driver license before operating a State-owned vehicle. To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:

  • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
  • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
  • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
  • Must be 21 years of age or older for Lead Position
  • Must be 16 years of age or older for Non-Lead Position
FOR LEAD
  • Good driving record and ability to work weekends, early mornings, and late evenings.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent customer service experience working with the public.
  • Reliable and timely.
  • Ability to self‑motivate and work independently.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma.
  • Experience working with boats, trailers, power washers, small engines, and/or heavy equipment preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word applications – Word, Excel, Access.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON LEAD)
  • Ability to work weekends, early mornings, and late evenings.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent customer service experience working with the public desired.
  • Reliable and timely.
