Head Custodian

The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment throughout Riverlawn Elementary School. The Head Custodian provides leadership and direction to custodial staff, coordinates daily custodial operations, monitors the condition of the building and grounds, and ensures that established cleaning, safety, and security procedures are followed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, assign, and monitor the work of custodial staff to ensure efficient completion of daily responsibilities.
  • Develop and coordinate daily and periodic cleaning schedules for classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, and other school facilities.
  • Inspect the building regularly to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and proper maintenance.
  • Open and/or secure the school facility according to established procedures.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of cleaning products, paper products, equipment, and other custodial materials.
  • Submit requests for custodial supplies, equipment, and necessary repairs as needed.
  • Operate and properly maintain custodial equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, buffers, extractors, and other equipment.
  • Clean and maintain floors, carpets, windows, walls, furniture, fixtures, restrooms, cafeterias, and other assigned areas.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety requirements and manufacturer instructions.
  • Identify and report maintenance, safety, plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling, or other facility concerns to the appropriate administrator or maintenance personnel.
  • Assist with preparation of the facility for school activities, meetings, athletic events, community activities, and special events.
  • Respond to spills, accidents, emergencies, and other situations requiring immediate custodial attention.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal and other weather-related facility needs as directed.
  • Maintain appropriate records related to custodial activities, supplies, equipment, work orders, and inspections.
  • Train and assist custodial staff in proper cleaning methods, equipment operation, chemical safety, and established school procedures.
  • Ensure custodial employees follow work schedules, safety procedures, attendance expectations, and school policies.
  • Communicate effectively with the principal, school staff, custodial employees, maintenance personnel, and other departments.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school personnel, students, and school-related matters.
  • Support a safe and welcoming school environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or Director of Maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, sanitation practices, and building maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain common custodial equipment.
  • Ability to safely use and handle cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to supervise, train, and work cooperatively with other employees.
  • Ability to identify maintenance and safety concerns and report them appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain regular and dependable attendance.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial or building maintenance experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or lead-worker experience preferred.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background checks and employment requirements.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position.

Physical Requirements:

  • The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
  • The employee may be required to lift and move supplies, furniture, equipment, and other items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
  • The employee may work on ladders and in areas requiring use of protective equipment.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily indoors but may require outdoor work and exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • The employee may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, noise, wet floors, and other conditions normally associated with custodial and school facility operations.
  • Appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment must be used as required.
