Solid Waste Operator

INTERNALGENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs responsible skilled work in the operation of motorized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of Solid Waste Supervisor.

Receiving, classifying and processing solid waste; cleaning and maintaining convenience center, equipment, and grounds.

• Disposes of white goods and tires.
• Operates mechanisms for stationary compactors.
• Picks up trash and cleans up around compactor sites.
• Cleans equipment.
• Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Responsible for recycling of solid waste of site.
• Cuts grass and trims shrubs as directed.
• Completes daily log and maintain records required by the state.
• Performs related tasks as required.

General knowledge of the methods used in equipment operation; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions accurately; dependability; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and general public.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in record keeping and heavy equipment operation.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;

work requires climbing, balancing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and oils.

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Ability to obtain Weighmaster and NC SWANA certifications within nine months of employment.
