Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker Positions operate under the Streets Division and the Facilities and Fleet Division. The level of skill and responsibility of each position is consistent throughout both divisions with general maintenance and construction activities being the focus of the maintenance worker positions. There are different priorities for each department, but generally a maintenance worker position will be required to perform routine and non-routine maintenance on city assets, including;

streets and storm drainage systems, rights of way, buildings and facilities, medians, grounds, parks and trails. On-call emergency response work is required for the maintenance worker positions as a result of various types of damage, equipment failure and alarm notifications from City facilities. Weekend work and after-hours work is required at times for City events, projects or emergencies.

Maintenance Worker I – Entry-level class allows the incumbent to develop semi-skilled and skilled level knowledge and abilities. Performs general maintenance and construction activities and tasks
2) Prepares materials lists and acquires goods of $250 or less
3) Expected to perform assigned activities without detailed instructions.

Maintenance Worker II – Journey level class in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full scope of assigned duties. In addition to the responsibilities expected of a Maintenance Worker I, a Maintenance Worker II:
1) Oversees and leads the onsite project activities and tasks, through coordinating the onsite field operations and assigning tasks to maintenance staff.
2) Prepares material lists and performs quantity takeoffs for projects.
3) Acquires materials and goods up to $2,499 per project.
4) Coordinates the onsite work with contractors and other maintenance staff.
5) Prepares written recommendations to Supervisor to address deficiencies noted in the field.
6) Expected to perform assigned tasks with limited instructions.

Senior Maintenance Worker – The incumbent performs lead supervisory duties, including assisting in the planning, assigning, and evaluation of the work of subordinates, giving recommendations on discipline, and providing training as required. In addition to the responsibilities expected of a Maintenance Worker II a Senior Maintenance Worker;
1) Coordinates onsite and offsite project details, including, a) obtaining contractor bids, b) coordinating requisition and P.O. processes, c) verifying the contract scope of work details d) providing clear direction to contractors and service providers on and off-site e) assuring project completion against contract requirements.
2) Responsible for procuring materials and goods in excess of $2,500.
3) Provides technical oversight and establishes specific goals for projects
4) Provides technical guidance within the scope of work details for maintenance and construction contracts.
5) Expected to perform tasks without technical instructions.

Examples of Essential Duties:

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignment will vary depending on the needs of the department.

  • Concrete and Asphalt Work – form setup, grade preparation, material placement and finishing.
  • Electrical Work – replacing fixtures, trenching, repairing and installing new conduit and wiring, installing and adjusting electrical time clocks, replacing electrical components.
  • Clean-up and Custodial Work – various types of debris clean-up from wind and storm events, public events, paint and liquid spills, construction work, general custodial work.
  • Painting – general maintenance painting, caulking, masking, clean-up.
  • Landscape Maintenance – tree pruning, planting, weed abatement, water system repairs.
  • Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, replacing street signs and emergency patching of streets, water and sewer lines.
  • Light Equipment and Tool Operations – use of paint sprayers, power washers, compacting machines, various saws, drills, vacuums, leaf blowers and other power and handheld tools.…
