The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Custodial Supervisor 1 for the Facilities Maintenance Services (FMS) Department. This position is responsible for supervising, scheduling, and overseeing day-shift daily cleaning activities for the department's custodial employees.
This position has the ability to progress to a Custodial Supervisor 2 after one year.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Establish priorities and develop work assignments to ensure that all cleaning requirements are met in an efficient manner; delegate tasks and responsibilities;
- Implement and monitor program activities by planning and organizing the unit's routine, project and emergency work;
- Develop work schedules and make necessary revisions to the schedule and/or the teams; adjust assignments when temporary staffing shortages occur to ensure consistency of service;
- Monitor activities and conduct daily inspections;
- Evaluate cleanliness of assigned square footage;
- Provide feedback for continuous improvement;
- Observe and document general conditions of buildings, floors, carpets, custodial equipment and supplies to provide feedback to the Assistant Director of Building Services;
- Assess training needs and conduct training as needed for Custodial staff;
- Ensure Custodial staff are informed of the most current cleaning techniques, methods, responsibilities, and hazardous materials;
- Conduct performance reviews;
- Provide corrective discipline and document personnel actions;
- Participate in new hire selection;
- Observe and report unusual activity;
- Responsible for internal pest control;
- Oversee, administer, and make the necessary updates to the Safety Data Sheets located in all buildings;
- Monitor and manage the custodial closet inventory in buildings; submit supply orders and ensure accurate reporting and proper use; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
- This position requires graduation from high school or equivalent education and two (2) years of building custodial and general building maintenance work, one (1) year of which must have included lead experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
A valid Class "C" driver's license or higher operator's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Physical Demands
This job requires working with and around hazardous building material containing asbestos and solvents; increased exposure to germs; frequent use of ladders and stairs; and exposure to hot and cold temperatures when working outside.
This position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling; exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
This position requires the ability to see, hear, and communicate through speech.
Preferred Qualifications Candidates with the following experience are encouraged to apply:
- Ability to facilitate a conflict resolution process with employees.
- Experience in operating and maintaining industrial type of cleaning equipment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including cross-department collaboration.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Schedule
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.
This position is part of the Facilities Services Weather Essential Personnel and may be required to report to work for their regularly scheduled shift without any phone/cell phone notification; and is subject to a variable workweek schedule.
This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
Compensation Grade
Grade 26
In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate's qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
