Head Custodian, Scituate High School/Middle School
The Scituate School Department seeks a reliable, hardworking, and safety-conscious Head Custodian to lead the daily custodial operations of an assigned school while supporting the cleanliness, maintenance, security, and overall appearance of district facilities. The successful candidate will coordinate the work of the custodial team and help provide a safe, healthy, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and community members.
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
- Providing day-to-day leadership and coordination of custodial operations within the assigned building.
- Assigning and monitoring daily custodial work to ensure district cleanliness standards and operational expectations are achieved.
- Assisting in training, mentoring, and supporting custodial staff, including orientation of new employees.
- Coordinating building maintenance needs and submitting or overseeing work orders through the district maintenance management system.
- Serving as the primary point of contact between the custodial staff, Building Principal, and Facilities Director regarding facility operations, maintenance concerns, and event preparation.
- Supporting emergency response, building readiness, and operational planning as directed.
- Addressing performance concerns promptly and documenting issues when necessary.
- Fostering teamwork, accountability, and professionalism within the custodial department.
- Maintaining open communication with the Building Administrator(s) and the Director of Facilities regarding staffing, performance, equipment needs, and building conditions.
- Overseeing the procurement, inventory, storage, distribution, and security of custodial supplies, equipment, and materials to ensure adequate stock levels and efficient building operations.
- Ordering custodial supplies, cleaning products, paper goods, and other facility materials in accordance with district purchasing procedures and approved budgets.
- Coordinating and overseeing routine grounds maintenance, including monitoring the appearance and upkeep of school grounds, landscaping, walkways, parking areas, and exterior spaces, and assigning or performing work as needed.
- Maintaining accurate inventory records and monitoring supply usage to promote cost-effective purchasing, minimize waste, and ensure operational readiness.
- Cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, locker rooms, restrooms, and other assigned areas.
- Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and washing floors, walls, windows, furniture, and fixtures.
- Replenishing restroom and custodial supplies as needed.
- Collecting and disposing of trash, recycling, and waste materials.
- Following established cleaning schedules and sanitation protocols.
- Operating and maintaining custodial equipment, including floor scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and vacuum systems.
- Stripping, waxing, buffing, and refinishing floors as directed.
- Performing routine maintenance tasks and reporting building maintenance needs to supervisors.
- Assisting with preventative maintenance activities and minor repairs.
- Assisting with snow removal activities, including shoveling, salting, sanding, and clearing walkways, entrances, and exits.
- Coordinating, performing, and overseeing routine grounds maintenance activities, including maintaining the appearance and safety of school grounds, walkways, parking areas, and exterior spaces.
- Assisting with emergency weather response and building readiness activities.
- Opening, securing, and locking buildings as assigned.
- Ensuring windows, doors, and building access points are properly secured.
- Monitoring facilities and reporting safety concerns, vandalism, or maintenance issues.
- Responding appropriately to emergencies and facility needs.
- Setting up and breaking down furniture, equipment, and rooms for school and community events.
- Managing the receipt, storage, organization, and distribution of custodial supplies, equipment, and materials to support daily building operations.
