Custodian II – Richmond State Supported Living Center
Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) as a Custodian II and help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents and staff at the Richmond State Supported Living Center. This full‑time, non‑exempt position includes a competitive salary of $2,694.70 to $3,269.08 per month, weekly work days, and an expected 5% travel requirement.
Responsibilities- Perform moderately complex custodial work in office buildings and resident living units, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows and light fixtures.
- Clean, disinfect, sanitize, and maintain a safe and healthy environment in accordance with training and regulations.
- Operate floor‑maintenance equipment (strippers, buffers, vacuums, extractors) and maintain assigned custodial equipment in good working order.
- Request and restock supplies; maintain inventory and equipment records.
- Assist in building and equipment inspections, report needed repairs, and perform minor maintenance and installations.
- Train and coach other custodians as needed and provide documentation of training.
- Maintain interior and exterior of assigned buildings, clear trash and debris, and ensure pathways remain safe.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, including supporting disaster response and continuity of operations activities; may require alternate shift patterns and/or locations.
- Work under general supervision with an independent judgment, completing documentation promptly and protecting confidential information.
- Attend work on a regular basis; may be required to work specific shift schedules or rotating schedules with extended shifts and overtime per agency leave policy.
- Possess on‑call status on a rotating schedule to meet operational needs.
- Ensure proper sanitization and disinfection practices; train staff on these procedures.
- Generate documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Cooperate with residents and staff to maintain optimal health and safe environments.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Understanding of infection control principles and methods.
- Understanding of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skill in operating custodial equipment, handling chemicals safely, and maintaining building maintenance tools.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to train others.
- Ability to supervise others, lift 50 pounds, stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods, and work irregular hours.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and residents.
- Initial Screening Criteria:
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
- Paid work experience in any field, or unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience.
- Preferred: Six months of custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or similar setting.
- Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities).
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be willing to work overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Males 18–25 must register with the Selective Service.
- All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire. Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.
