Overview

The Office of Career Programs and Employer Relations at Dominican University seeks Executives and Experts in Residence (EIR) to connect students with community and business organizations and to provide career mentoring from an industry perspective. EIRs are accessible to students via appointments in Handshake and are paid a modest stipend in return for sharing career advice, industry expertise, connections, and networks with the Dominican community.

The hallmark of the program is one-on-one mentoring sessions in which EIRs advise students on prospective career paths. EIRs are expected to spend at least one day on campus face-to-face to build relationships with students and community members. Meetings typically occur multiple times per semester and are about 30 minutes in length, tailored to the students’ needs and interests.

Mentoring Focus

Discussions typically address a student’s interests, background, and experience as they consider a career in a particular profession. EIRs may advise students on:

  • Assistance with resume building, Linked In, cover letters, and job-search materials
  • Job and internship search strategies, interview skills
  • Required skills and abilities for success in a specific industry or organization
  • Planning a career path beyond the initial position after graduation
  • Graduate or professional school applications
  • Maintaining momentum once a career path is chosen
  • Navigating challenging professional or personal issues at work

Key Responsibilities

The primary role is providing multiple 1:1 career mentoring sessions with students each semester to advise and coach them on prospective career choices. Other duties include:

  • Contributing to special projects assigned by the Senior Director of Career Programs & Employer Relations
  • Guest lectures in undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Using an intrusive advising model to communicate with individual students via phone and email to build rapport and increase appointment activity
  • Utilizing Handshake for appointments and promoting the platform to students
  • Encouraging and supporting career development events by promoting opportunities to students
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Experience as a current or past leader (Executive-level leadership, C-suite, VP, President, etc.) in a relevant field or career path
  • Experience in career mentoring
  • Flexibility to be on campus at least 1 day per week
  • Ability to meet with students in-person and virtually via Zoom or phone
Preferred Qualifications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to spend long durations of the workday sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds

Salary and FLSA Status
  • Salary: $4,000 - $8,000 depending on hours per week
  • FLSA Status:
    Exempt, Part-time
