Salary: $89,841.74 annually

This position is a vehicle mechanic who, under general direction, maintains various types of automotive engines used on automotive and light, medium and heavy‑duty trucks and equipment. The role includes diagnostic testing, overhaul and repair of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, air brake systems, electrical systems, and major vehicle components. The mechanic will order supplies, prepare work orders, and log completed work in individual vehicle folders.

This is a full‑time Local 700 position.

• Provide diagnostic tests and identify problems needing repair
• Maintain work log records manually or via a Computer Maintenance Management System
• Overhaul and repair engines, transmissions, clutches, air brake systems, alternators, starters, differentials, pumps, electrical systems, steering systems, and other major components
• Execute engine removal, disassembly, rebuild, reassembly, and installation on vehicles
• Perform front‑end alignment and wheel balancing; repair or replace exhaust and related components
• Prepare parts requisitions, work time, and materials records
• May operate tow truck and service disabled vehicles

• High school diploma, GED, or higher
• At least 1 year of full‑time experience working on diesel engines
• At least 3 years of full‑time experience as a professional vehicle mechanic at a licensed auto servicer or dealership, or possession of an automotive technical school mechanic certification, or automotive dealer mechanic certification
• Valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License

• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
• Certification under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act via an EPA‑approved training program
• At least one season of experience with the Forest Preserves of Cook County or partner agencies

• Knowledge of overhauling and repairing automotive and truck equipment, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and emission control systems
• Understanding of gasoline and diesel engine operation and component maintenance
• Familiarity with tools, materials, and equipment of the trade
• Background with Ford, Sterling, International, CAT, and diesel‑powered trucks
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and diagnose mechanical and electrical problems
• Ability to perform repairs and overhaul with minimal supervision and supply own tools
• Ability to use factory repair manuals for district vehicles
• Physical capability for climbing, lifting, pulling, and moving moderate to heavy objects
