Qualifications
  • Education:

    A master’s or doctoral degree in psychology or a related field from an accredited institution is required. A Ph.D. in psychology is preferred.
  • Teaching

    Experience:

    Prior teaching experience at the college or university level is highly desirable, especially in psychology or a related discipline.
  • Subject Matter Expertise:
    Demonstrated expertise in psychology, with a strong foundation in psychological theories, research methods, and applications.
  • Communication

    Skills:

    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Technology Proficiency:
    Proficiency in educational technology tools and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas) is preferred.

Responsibilities

The Adjunct Psychology Instructor will teach undergraduate courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Health Psychology, with opportunities to teach additional specialized courses such as Theories of Personality, Psychology of Gender, and Adolescent Psychology. Course preparation will include developing and revising syllabi, assignments, and assessments in alignment with departmental objectives and current pedagogical standards. The instructor will foster an inclusive and supportive classroom climate, advise, and mentor students as needed.

Student performance will be evaluated using varied assessment methods, and timely, constructive feedback will be provided. The instructor is expected to remain current in the discipline and in higher education pedagogy through professional development activities. Departmental collaboration and contributions to program initiatives and curriculum development are expected, as are basic administrative tasks such as submitting grades, maintaining records, and meeting institutional deadlines.

  • Utilizes active learning and student success strategies in the classroom.
  • Keeps up-to-date in teaching area/discipline including licenses, training or certificates as applicable.
  • Teaches to pre-approved course objectives.
  • Instructs students in the facts and skills pertaining to the assigned course(s).
  • Considers the general and special needs of all students, and seeks additional help or refers students to other college support services when necessary.
  • Electronically submits syllabi to the appropriate department or division office.
  • Creates, updates, and distributes to all students every semester a course syllabus according to the format required by Board policy.
  • Prepares and delivers according to the assigned schedule a final exam unless an exception is preapproved by the Dean.
  • Submits midterm enrollment verification forms and final grade reports, notices, attendance records by due dates and any other reports pertaining to assigned courses within fourteen days.
  • Informs the department chairperson/program coordinator and Dean in writing of any pending problem that may have a detrimental effect on the department, school, or college.
  • Keeps students informed of course progress both verbally and electronically as appropriate.
  • Informs students of relevant educational and occupational opportunities.
  • Commits best resources to the success of all students by recognizing, understanding and embracing diversity.
  • Conducts classes as scheduled and approved by the Dean’s office.
  • Cooperates with the department chairperson/program coordinator, department members, and the appropriate administrators in the development of curriculum, and in the preparation and update of course syllabi, course outlines, selection of textbooks, and assessment activities.
  • Attends regular department/program meetings and college meetings as available.
  • Holds office hours for students as outlined in the course syllabus and in space available by college.
  • Utilizes appropriate written and oral communication skills.
  • Understands and appropriately utilizes all instructional technology as available in classrooms and labs.
  • Maintains classroom and/or lab equipment in good order and, when needed, maintains an inventory of assigned equipment and supplies.
  • Recommends library books and other instructional materials and places reading materials on reserve in the library when needed.
  • Follows Student Handbook policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as requested or assigned, limited to duties an adjunct faculty member would normally perform for the semester they are assigned.
