Instructional Aide

Essential Function:

Support the specialized activities in the areas of Microbiology and Biotechnology.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

* Preferred:
Associate Degree in Science (AS) or Associate in Applied Science (AAS) with concentration in chemistry, biology or biotechnology.

* Minimum:
At least 12 college credits in chemistry, biology and microbiology (equivalent to to 3-4 courses, not at an introductory level).

* Proficient in the use of computer software Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

* Proficient in the use of analytical scales.

* Proficient in the use of aseptic technique.

* Experience culturing mammalian cells.

* Excellent communication and time management skills.

* Excellent teamwork skills.

* Experience in the preparation of microbiological culture media, pH standards and mammalian cell culture media.

* Experience preparing chemical solutions, such as buffers, pH standards.

* Experience with the use of autoclaves and sterilizers.

* Experience with common laboratory equipment, including non-analytical scales, pH meters, water baths, chemical fume hoods, biological culture cabinets, and microscopes.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

* Prepare culture media for the microbiology and biotechnology laboratories following established standard operating procedures.

* Prepare growth media for the Cell & Tissue Culture laboratory following standard operating procedures.

* Dispose of biological waste following proper sterilization procedures involving the use of an autoclave.

* Keep an up-to date inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.

* Procure quotes to the department's office assistant for purchasing of materials and supplies.

* Keep logs of equipment service appointments.
